CHAPTER SIX

“WELL, isn’t that a cozy plan,” Lorna Wyatt drawled. “This way you can even have a honeymoon weekend at the lake, for free. Somebody’s obviously been thinking ahead.” The way she looked at Jessica left no doubt about who she meant.

Jessica was still too stunned to care.

“I expect the rest of our lives will be one long honeymoon,” Keir said. He smiled at Jessica and gently traced the line of her lips with the tip of his index finger.

She had to smother the urge to bite him. What had happened to Clementine’s training, anyway? It wasn’t supposed to be so difficult to maintain her self-control.

“Daddy,” Lorna said plaintively. “Do you suppose we could all get on with the party, now that the sideshow is over?”

Walter Wyatt dragged his attention away from Jessica. “Yes, of course, honey. Everybody gather around, please.” He turned toward the living room. “I have something important to say.” But he sounded as if his heart wasn’t in the announcement.

The crowd shifted away from the sun porch. Jessica realized abruptly that she was still in Keir’s arms, pressed so tightly against his chest that the pearl studs in his formal shirt had formed indentations in her ribs. She broke away from him and pulled him off to a deserted corner. “Why the hell did you do that?” Her voice was no more than a harsh whisper.

“Well, you seemed to be worried about Trevor, so I thought this would head off any trouble. And you also said you thought being married wasn’t such a bad idea after all, so—”

“I may have said it, but I didn’t exactly expect you to pop up with a license! You don’t really have one, do you?”

“I’m not carrying it around with me, no. But—”

“You can’t even get a marriage license without both people applying in person—can you?”

“I don’t know if you’re supposed to be able to,” Keir said cautiously, “but in actual fact it was dead easy.”

Jessica swore under her breath. “You honestly weren’t kidding? Whatever made you think of it, anyway?”

“It was Bernie’s idea.”

“You know, I’m really beginning to dislike that guy.”

“That’s too bad. I was going to ask him to be my best man.”

Jessica wasn’t listening any more. “All right, I don’t suppose there’s any way around it. Maybe after all it wasn’t such a bad idea to get the license. We can just pretend to use it, and—”

Keir shook his head. “No. We’d be bound to get caught, and then we’d really be in the soup.”

Reluctantly, Jessica had to admit he was right. Lorna, for one, was capable of demanding to see a certificate proving there had actually been a ceremony. For that matter, she was probably capable of demanding to be invited—

“Anyway, it’s only a formality,” Keir said. “It’s not as if we—”

Walter Wyatt’s voice boomed suddenly, drowning him out. “So I’m proud to introduce you to the young man who’s going to be my son-in-law, Lorna’s intended husband—Trevor McIntyre!”

Jessica’s jaw dropped.

Keir put a finger under her chin and gently closed her mouth.
