Chapter Twenty
A shadow jolted Tim awake. His hands attempted to move into a defensive position, but they chafed against the bindings behind his back. Squinting against the morning sun, he sucked in a painful breath. With his heart beating double time, he peered up at the cowboy hovering over him. âDanâ?â
A swift kick to his shin caused him to groan.
âGet up, you two.â Danielâs voice was serious and hard.
Timâs limbs sprang back to life in a shower of prickles. He winced as he tried to move his neck. Heâd not thought he could sleep with how tight theyâd done up his hands, but heâd succumbed at some point.
âUp!â Daniel shouted again.
âIâm tied, you weasel.â He gritted his teeth to keep from calling Daniel anything worse.
âWatch your insults, mister. Unless you want me to gag you.â
Tim sneered up at Daniel, but the look his âfriendâ was giving him held a soft warning.
Daniel stooped to untie Timâs ankles then nudged Gwenâs shoulder.
Startling, she rolled back, hitting Tim square in the chest, eyes wide, breath short.
âSteady.â Daniel moved to untie her feet.
A man carrying a rifle walked up. âFree her hands, too. Weâll have them take care of business before we give âem coffee. Take the girl over there.â The golden-haired man caked with weeks of trail dirt jabbed his boney finger toward a clump of trees. âIâll keep my gun on him. He wonât run off without her.â
Seemed Daniel hadnât informed them of who they were. Was he pretending ignorance to save his hide or theirs?
Daniel pulled up Gwen none too gently.
She whimpered, likely from the blood rushing to her feet.
Tim couldnât keep from scowling at Daniel as he dragged her away. But then, if Daniel treated her too nicely, perhaps their familiarity would be exposed.
Tim eyed the man in front of him. Of the five in the group, he was the leanest. Once his hands were untied, could he take him?
Unfortunately, another man came to lead him away while the first kept his gun aimed at his head. At least Daniel was with Gwenânot that he was certain he could trust him, but he was less worrisome than the others.
After heâd relieved himself, he was returned to the tree where heâd spent a fitful nightâhalf because of the danger they faced, half because heâd been sleeping next to Gwen. Even in such dire circumstances, heâd had to keep his mind busy to ignore the sound of her breathing, how she smelled, her hair brushing across his face.
Gwen returned, rebound at the wrists in front instead of behind, ankles free, same as he now was. How soon did these men expect them to return to walking?
After rolling up a bedroll, Daniel pointed at a man who appeared younger than the rest. âTake them food along with that water. But only untie the woman. She can feed them both.â
âBut why?â
âJust do it.â
If Daniel was the boss, what did that mean for them?
The other man tossed a canteen and pouch toward Tim before stooping to untie Gwen.
