8½. MAN UNITED: 2013-2015

I’m sorry, but these two years made me so unhappy I can’t write much about them! I’ve tried hard to forget them, but they keep coming back in bad dreams that wake me up in the middle of the night. Before Sir Alex Ferguson retired I really hoped that the club would not make David Moyes the new manager. When they did, I was so disappointed. In my opinion he was not good enough for United. I did not think the world’s top players would want to sign for United with Moyes as manager. I did not think he had enough experience of football at the top level. Here’s a short look at his (less than) one season in charge.

In August, United try to get Cesc Fagregas, Gareth Bale, Leighton Baines, Sami Khedira, Fabio Coentrao and Ander Herrera. They don’t get any of them. They get Fellaini. Hm. Moyes thinks that the Premier League have fixed the fixtures to give United a hard start to the season. Hm.

We win the first game of the season 4-1 at Swansea. Top of the league. Hurray! From this point it is down hill all the way to the end of the season. United fans put up a notice at the Stretford End: ‘The Chosen One’. This is United’s answer to Jose Mourinho, Chelsea’s ‘Special One’. We draw the second game 0-0 against Chelsea – the first Premier League goal-less draw at Old Trafford since 2009. Boo!

In January, Mata is signed from Chelsea. Now we will score more goals. But we don’t. When Liverpool come to Old Trafford, Moyes says that they are favourites to win the game. What??? How can you ever say that to United fans??? To make things worse, when we lose to City, Moyes says City are playing at a higher level than United, and we should try our best to reach that level. No, no, no, no, NO!!! Some United fans are so angry, they get a plane to fly over Old Trafford with the notice: ‘Wrong One – Moyes Out’.

In April, after a terrible 0-2 loss at Everton, Moyes is finally sacked. Giggsy takes over for four games, but United finish seventh. For the first time since the 1980s, we will not be playing in Europe next season.

On to 2014-2015. I am happier when Louis van Gaal takes over. He has won trophies in different countries. He has worked with some of the world’s best players. Things will get better now. In come Di Maria and Falcao. This must mean we will score lots of goals! Oh, but wait a moment ….. out go Wellbeck, Chicharito, Nani and Zaha, so maybe not. In come Shaw, Rojo, Herrera and Blind to make defence and midfield stronger.
