A quick internet search for Whitfield Diffie reveals images of a cryptographic messiah. Now in his seventies, Diffie is regularly pictured in tailored three-piece suits, highlighting his shoulder-length white hair and wonderfully pointed beard. By all accounts Diffie was (and still is) a maverick and in 1974 was trying to convince others to believe in his cause – solving the key-distribution problem. While giving a call to arms at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson Laboratory and tentatively presenting his ideas, Diffie was faced with a roomful of sceptics. His attempts to find a solution were still in their infancy and many believed that solving the key-distribution problem was impossible.
