CHAPTER 23

VINCENT

“This is too close. We should have met at the usual place,” York grumbled as I approached him in the garage. I unlocked my BMW and motioned for him to get in.

“I told you. Deirdre’s upstairs. I can’t be driving all over New York. Not tonight.”

He swore under his breath, but he settled down. He took a deep breath and stretched his feet out before him as he slid the seat back. Deirdre had sat there earlier so it was pulled to within inches of the glovebox. I smirked as I watched him fiddling with it.

“Besides,” I added as I pulled from the garage onto the street, “it won’t hurt to change things up a little. Just this once.”

York just nodded at that. “Did he say why this was so important? What’s so special we all had to get out of bed in the middle of the night?”

“Not specifically. We didn’t have long to talk.”

Not with Deirdre there. Carlo had taken a big enough risk as it was to just come to my place. He’d insisted he meet with York tonight. In person. It was the first time he’d done that. I found the request so unexpected and alarming that I’d agreed to it. I knew we couldn’t go into the details right there, not with Deirdre downstairs. He was sensitive to my predicament, but when I’d asked if it could wait until Monday, until I could put something better together, he’d tightened his resolve.

“I understand if you can’t be there. But I need to see York tonight, with or without you.”

And whatever he wanted to share tonight was big enough that he wasn’t waiting around, even after he’d said he needed to lay low for a while.

We’d picked a meeting spot not far from my place, but obscure enough that no one would notice. There were street corners and dark alleys everywhere. The back of a theatre was just as good as the back of a restaurant.

We parked in the lot then walked to the back of the building.

“You’re sure he’ll be here?” York asked as we leaned against the wall.

“Do they train you to be paranoid?” I grumbled back.

He snorted. “As a matter of fact, they do. It’s a job requirement. And it’s kept me alive and well for years. I’d say it’s a trait we all aspire to.”

I just nodded. I liked York, respected him as a professional. But I wasn’t standing in the dark of a smelly alley to discuss job duties. I didn’t feel like talking at all. My mind wasn’t where it should have been. It was back in the loft with the beautiful woman I’d left sleeping because I couldn’t come up with another way to make this meeting work. My thoughts were so caught up in remembering
