“Saxon, can you pass me that tool there?” I point to the one I need, and in a flash of movement, it’s in my hand. “Oh, thanks.” I blink, still startled at the speed which the man can move. He chuckles before retreating back to the rocking chair he was putting together for Lila.

“What are you both doing?” A voice from the doorway draws my attention. Xavier is leaning on the frame, watching us, and standing next to him is a beaming Caspian who’s holding a few bags.

“You’re back! Where’s Lila? How did it go?” I ask him, peering around and trying to catch a glimpse of my pretty fiancée. Xavier grimaces and pushes off the frame before stalking into the room, while Caspian comes over, places the bags to one side, and looks around the room.

“This looks amazing. Lila is going to love it,” he says as he takes in the ocean mural the grandpas ordered for the nursery. The people came yesterday and installed it.

“Where is she?” I ask again, because neither of them answered.

“I’d like to know too,” Saxon says through a mouthful of fangs. He had the blood bags I drew to keep him fed while she was gone, but their mating is so new that it really wasn’t enough.

“Eric and William’s sister-in-law is downstairs, and she didn’t want to leave them alone with her.” Xavier stares out the window, watching the stormy ocean the nursery overlooks.

“They arrived not long after you left, and we were dismissed just as quickly,” I tell them. “She looked at us like we were kata beast poo on her shoe.”

Cas raises his hand. “Me too.”

“It was easier and better for us to escape up here and put together the furniture that was delivered this morning.” I use the tool to put two of the panels together.

“What is it? It looks interesting.” Cas cocks his head like he’s trying to work out what I’m doing. I can’t stop the huge smile that crosses my face.

“I special ordered these from Aquilia. They are mermaid baby cribs.” I hold out the leaflet from the one I’m putting together so he can see what they look like. “They have glass walls and will fill with water so the baby can be in shifted form as well as their bipedal form. You know most Aquilians don’t use their bipedal form very often, but it’s becoming more common, so someone invented these, because like shifter babies, their young also have poor control over their shifts.”

Caspian’s mouth drops open, and he stares at me with wide-eyed amazement. “You did that for our babies?”

I shrug, feeling slightly embarrassed and worried that I’ve overstepped. “I’m sorry, I was so excited when I saw them, I didn’t think to ask if you wanted them or not.”

Caspian shakes his head, waving a hand at me. “Don’t be sorry, they are your babies too. It’s just so thoughtful. Thank you, I love them, and Lila is going to practically pee her pants.”

“Not if they are not together when she gets here.
