ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Peter S. Jensen, MD, is Director of the Center for the Ad-

vancement of Children’s Mental Health—Putting Science to

Work, and Ruane Professor of Child Psychiatry, both at the

Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in

New York. Before coming to Columbia University, he was the

Associate Director of Child and Adolescent Research at the

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in Bethesda,

Maryland.

Dr. Jensen has written over two hundred articles and

chapters for scientific and clinical journals, has edited or

authored a dozen books on children’s mental health research,

and currently serves as coeditor or editorial board member of

many journals. He has served on the Scientific Advisory

Boards of the Tourette Syndrome Association, the Attention

Deficit Disorder Association, and Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (CHADD). He currently serves on the scientific advisory boards for the

National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) and the Medical Investigation of Neurologic Disorders (M.I.N.D.) Institute, as a member of the CHADD board of directors, and as the current president of the International Society of Research on Child and Adolescent

Psychopathology. His research, writing, and teaching have been recognized by national awards from the major psychiatry, child psychiatry, psychology, and nursing associations, as well as NAMI and CHADD.

Dr. Jensen received his medical degree in 1978 from the George Washington University Medical School in Washington, DC. He did his postgraduate training at the University of California and at Letterman Army Medical Center, both in San Francisco. From there, he moved to NIMH, where he served as the lead NIMH investigator on the six-site NIMH- and U.S. Department of Education–funded Study of Multimodal Treatment of ADHD and

worked on other multicenter studies.

Dr. Jensen’s current areas of interest include the integration of research methods into clinical settings, effectiveness and dissemination research, and techniques for persuading medical practitioners and parents to adopt evidence-based mental health approaches in dealing with children who are suffering from mental disorders—“putting science to work.”
