Chapter 29

It had been two weeks since the incident, and after experiencing one more storm, Camila finally agreed that the weather was too unpredictable for traveling and had to admit as much to Garrison. Besides, there was no way she could go home with the bruises and scratches on her face and body. It would be impossible to convince her brothers that it hadn’t been Garrison who hurt her.

In the two weeks since the attack, she had not slept through the night once. She kept seeing George Tate’s face over her and feeling his hands on her body, her arms, and her legs. She was having difficulty keeping herself from falling apart, especially in front of the children.

Every evening after taking her bath, Camila knocked lightly on the door of Garrison’s office. Then he followed her back to her parlor, where he applied the doctor’s ointment to the large, ugly bruise that covered her upper back from shoulder to shoulder and from her neck down to her waist.

The first night he had to do it was very difficult. He was nervous about seeing and touching her naked back. When he slowly nodded his head and forced a tight-lipped, “Yes, I’m fine,” Camila turned back around softly said, “Well, it’s okay. I’m ready.”

His first touch made her gasp, shiver, and pull slightly away. “I’m sorry, Camila, I know it hurts, but I’m trying to be gentle.”

She didn’t know how to tell him that it wasn’t just the pain that had caused her to shudder. It was his touch; it caused bursts of heat to suddenly suffuse throughout her body. His calloused fingers ministered so gently to her bruises that she had to steel herself so that her legs would support her.

When he finished, Garrison carefully slid the wrap up over her shoulders, and when she turned with her hands tightly grasping the front of the robe to her chest to thank him, he handed her the ointment and exited the parlor quickly.

After the fourth night, they both settled down and seemed to have lost some of their tension and anxiety, so much so that they talked about the events of their day with one another. It appeared they had formed a companionable bond.

When Garrison asked Camila each morning how she’d slept, she told him she was sleeping better. But he knew she was having
