Patrick hadn’t said where to meet him, only the time, so I snuck out at eleven. But not before I made Matilda, the pig, promise to sleep in front of my bedroom door. She was to block the hallway and to not let anyone in my room no matter what. She promised, and I pledged to feed her an entire box of gingersnap cookies for her efforts. The pig has a soft spot for gingersnaps.

I tiptoed my way out of the house with Piss in the lead and DeeDee bringing up the rear. If anybody asked, I would just say that DeeDee’s stomach seemed to be bothering her and I was taking her for a walk. That’s why I carried a leash… not that it was connected to her.

We got out of the house undetected, and I quickly began to march up the driveway. My assumption was that was where Patrick wanted to meet. Otherwise, he should have told me that I was going to have to move my car, and that would make my alibi considerably trickier to pull off.

I was halfway up the driveway when, “Who goes there?” was squawked at me.

“It’s just us, Percival,” I called out to the blind peacock. He strutted toward us, his bright, beautiful tail feathers on display.

“I’m in the middle of my patrol,” he announced. “I have not detected any intruders.”

“Thank you,” I told the brightly colored bird. “I’m taking DeeDee and Piss with me.”

“Where are you going?”

“For a walk,” Piss answered quickly.

I glanced at the cat curiously, then I realized that she was preventing me telling Percival where we were going, so that the peacock wouldn’t report it to my grandfather. Since he, too, can talk to animals, my alibi could be shredded by the big bird.

“It’s a lovely evening,” Percival replied, unaware of the machinations that were taking place around him. “Enjoy yourselves.”

“Thank you,” I told the bird. “And thank you for keeping a watch over everyone.”

“I’m much better at it than that newcomer,” he huffed indignantly, and then strutted off.

“Thanks for catching that,” I said to Piss quietly.

“Catch?” DeeDee asked, her ears perking up.

“Thought it was safer that way, Sugar,” the cat purred quietly.

We continued on, only to be stopped next by the grunting of a llama.

Alejandro pawed the ground. “The minty man is lurking.”

“He’s here already?” I asked, surprised.

“The minty man is here,” the llama confirmed. “He seems frightened. That is why I did not sound the alarm. I do not believe him to be a threat.”

My stomach tightened when I heard the animal’s assessment. I didn’t doubt Alejandro’s instincts. Patrick was afraid and that made me nervous.

“You did well,” I complimented the llama. “He’s not a threat.”

“Is he a friend?”

“He’d like to be a friend with benefits,” God quipped from my shoulder.

“Patrick is an ally,” I told the llama.

Alejandro danced out of the path nervously as DeeDee, deciding she wanted to see if the redhead had any food for her, woofed, “Patrick!” softly and began to trot toward the end of the driveway.
