The long, stainless-steel adapter slid out of Dare’s neck. One single prong had fed him terabytes of information every second. Now, his accelerated instruction had ended. But how long would they let him rest before they tested him physically?

He glanced around at the plain white walls of the training cabin. At least back at the labs, Onatria had decorated their lodging to feel like a bedroom. The plain walls of the military’s chambers only served to remind him how they viewed clones.

During his time with Mikayla, he’d forgotten he was only a clone. His time with her left him with the hope that he could have a life not run by the military. But Madison yanked that dream away. Dare would never be more than a clone they used when they wanted. He should have never started a relationship with Mikayla, never hoped for anything more.

The cabin door whooshed open and in walked two men in military fatigues. “Lieutenant, everything I am about to tell you is classified top secret. Do you understand what that means?”

“Yes, sir.”

He eyed the man holding on to the folder. The other man strapped a med-cuff around his arm and proceeded to read his measurements.

“Good. I am Colonel Cooper, your commander for this mission. An alien spacecraft has been found hiding behind Ceres in the asteroid belt. You will spend tomorrow in the simulator and the following day, you will fly an SF-4 to Mars. We need to find out the intentions of that ship. We have a battalion ready and more on the way, but we don’t want to start an unnecessary war. It is your mission to get close to them and open the lines of communication. Any questions?”

Dare shook his head. He’d wanted this, been trained for this moment. But his life at the base had ended, and his chances of returning from this mission were slim. No one believed an alien ship would come in peace. He would be their confirmation, the one they would sacrifice before the war began. His life had just been given an expiration date.

“All is well.” The man removed the cuff. “He’s fit to fly. The bolt stunner had no effect.”

“Good.” Colonel Cooper patted Dare’s shoulder. “Get some rest, Lieutenant, and I’ll be back at oh-six-hundred to take you to the simulators.”

They left and the door closed behind them, the locked indicator glowing on the panel. Then the lights went out.

Damn that Thompson! Dare could have said goodbye, but that asshole had zapped him. Would Mikayla know what happened? Would she even care?

He groaned. No, the entire thing was his fault. Showing up at her doorstep was wrong. Going into her house? Even worse. He’d known all along he would have to leave her. And now she was alone again. Shit. He’d never meant to hurt her.

He tried to clear his mind, to rest for his trials tomorrow, but his thoughts remained on Mikayla.
