Chapter Seventeen

Colin stepped from his carriage and looked up at the front of Reginald’s London townhome. It had only been a week since he came to the ball hosted by Reginald and his wife, yet it felt much longer.

In that short time, so much had happened. He had learned Lady Mariah admired dogs as much as he did, only to discover she disdained them, and it had all been a lie in order to…what? Gain his approval? He had purchased her a dog as revenge, only to be coerced into helping train the dog. Additionally, Lady Mariah had injured herself, putting a stop to the training after only one attempt.

He shook his head. One week. Who would have guessed so much could happen? And in London?

A smile turned up the corners of his lips as he remembered Mariah from the day at the park. With her hair sticking this way and that—twigs and leaves sticking out all over her head and her dress stained with dirt and grass. Even after a week, it was still a picture he found himself thinking about more often than not.

He had not seen her in days. Which felt rather odd when he thought about it. He and his friends naturally attended the same events in Town. They had been doing it for most of their adult lives. If they had to endure society’s events, they all agreed it was best if they did it together. And this year, with Lady Mariah having her come out, where Reginald went, Lady Mariah went too. It meant Colin had seen her nearly every night since he’d arrived in London. And sometimes he even saw her during the day, as they had taken to meeting in Reginald’s study rather than at Brooks’s.

Indeed, he had noticed Mariah’s absence the last week. And while he did not like to admit it, he missed seeing her—which he could not understand why. There were more things than not that he disliked about her, such as her ridiculous pouting and rather selfish behavior.

However, there were a few things he found tolerable. She was quick-witted, and he could not deny he found her quite the most handsome woman in London. But still, those were nothing to justify his constant thinking about her. It was rather maddening.

Over the last few days, he had oft wondered what was becoming of her relationship with Biscuit—he shook his head. It was truly a dreadful name. While he had bought the animal as a sort of joke, if he were being truthful, he hoped perhaps Mariah would come to like the animal, eventually.

The door opened without Colin ever pulling on the doorbell. “Good evening, my lord.” Maxwell motioned Colin inside. “Lord Stoke and the rest of his guests are in the Green Salon. If you will follow me—”

Colin held up his hand. “Do not trouble yourself, Maxwell. I know the way.”

Reginald meant the evening to be an informal event with only close friends in attendance.

He had not said he had invited anyone other than their small group of friends.
