Chapter Twenty

Major Pattisson stepped aboard the Lunar with mixed emotions. It had been two months since he had last seen Alexander, or indeed anyone from the ship. The Lunar had departed for the Almaaz system immediately Captain Ivanov had been able to retrieve his two missing officers. They had received an urgent call from the small space station orbiting Jamal, for medical supplies and assistance to combat a viral outbreak and had departed as soon as possible. Once there, they had found themselves in constant demand, ferrying personnel and supplies between Jamal and Mayia and the space station. Chief Medical Officer Roy had also assisted the local medics in isolating the virus. Now they were back at Capella and Pattisson was keen to speak to Captain Ivanov to see what progress he had made in finding his assailants.

He went straight to the Captain’s quarters, keeping a wary eye out for Alexander or Duran. He was certain he wanted to avoid Duran if at all possible but he was still ambivalent about Jack. He had thought he was over him but he was disconcerted to find himself taking a second look at a brown haired man he saw in the distance. Ivanov was expecting him and stood up at his entrance,

“Major, how are you? Please have a seat.”

Pattisson sat down. Ivanov looked tired he thought, his eyes heavy, the lines in his face more pronounced. Wisps of light brown hair were escaping from his pony tail and his uniform looked as if he had slept in it. He’d heard several hundred people had died on Jamal before the virus was brought under control. “Bad?” he enquired sympathetically.

Ivanov started to shake his head then realised he didn’t have to put on a confident face before the Major. “Hellish!” he agreed. “There was so little we could do until the medics were able to identify the virus and develop the vaccine. It was simply a matter of quarantining the infected, and then waiting. We had to separate partners, parents from children ...”

He broke off and rolled his shoulders to ease their tension. “Are you here officially Major, or can I offer you a drink?”

There was a time and place for being official, Ivanov obviously needed to unwind a little. Pattisson sat back in his chair and smiled, “A drink would be welcome. Have you got any Aurigan whisky by any chance?”

Ivanov poured them both a whisky and came around his desk to draw a couple of more comfortable chairs together around a small table. Despite his effort to relax, he found himself sitting forward in the chair, his arms on his knees as he relived the experience. Pattisson listened, just letting him talk, not offering any advice except when it was asked for. Eventually the Captain ran out of steam and topped up their drinks, finally sitting back in his chair. “I appreciate that Pattisson, I must say it’s good to be able to talk to someone who understands what I’m talking about.
