“I feel bad for these niggas’ daughters out here. Do you see these little, handsome ass sons that you and I have?” Jah asked, and I shook my head while laughing.

It was a little bit after nine at night, and Jah and I were standing in the parking lot of the park with one of the players on the team whose name was Cameron. Jah’s son was not too far from where we were with RJ, and the two of them were racing back and forth in the grass.

Jah was absolutely right about the two handsome men that we were raising. True to his word, he’d brought his son out to my park, and he was now playing for me. Little man was a beast on the field. Getting to know Jah on a more personal level, I had to admit that I actually fucked with him. That was a lot for me to say because these days, my trust was fucked up, so I hardly looked for new friends. The only friends that I had were my wife and my son.

What had me looking at Jah as a real stand up guy was the fact that although PJ didn’t belong to him, he loved that little boy the same way that I loved RJ, even though he wasn’t my biological son. He and I had busy schedules, but we kept saying how we needed to get the boys together and our wives for a dinner one of these days. The way he talked about his wife, Antonia, I was sure that Eva and her would instantly click.

“Don’t I know it. RJ already comes home, talking about he has a girlfriend. Two days ago, he told me his girlfriend’s name was Tanya, and yesterday, his girlfriend’s name was Mya. I’m like, well damn, what happened to Tanya? You know that little boy told me that he broke up with Tanya because Mya bought him ice cream during lunch. I’m not about to be raising no dog though, so when he gets older, we going to have our little talk,” I said, and Jah was rolling over laughing.

I turned around and looked at Cameron. He was so quiet that I forgot he was even standing behind us.

“Cameron, where your mama at, man? I told you that if you needed me to drop you, I would,” I said, turning around and facing him.

As the owner of this park, I made it my duty not to step foot inside my car and pull out of this parking lot, until the last player was picked up. A lot of the boys stayed just a few blocks over from the park, so they’d walk, while others were picked up, and a few even went homes on bikes and their skateboards.

A lot of the coaching tactics that I had stemmed from watching the way Coach would handle things when I was back in high school playing for him. I remember he would stand out in the parking lot with the team, and he wouldn’t leave until he was the last person standing.
