Chapter Eleven

Johannes and Daniel helped Solomon unload the eck decorations, and a blushing Elizabeth headed back to the house. The wedding would take place under a tent, which meant reconsidering how they’d set up the eck without a proper corner.

“We’ll have to make a frame,” Johannes said. “There’s no way around it.”

“It shouldn’t be too hard,” Solomon replied, “if we can get the lumber and make two walls. Tobias Lapp still does drywalling, doesn’t he?”

“Yah,” Johannes said. “That’s a good idea. If we asked for his help, I’m sure he would. We couldn’t waste any time, though. And we’ll have to have the frame done first.”

“It would look good—a false corner—the shelves hung on both sides,” Solomon said. “I wonder if we could hang a rod for the quilt to drape over, like the quilt displays in the fabric shop . . .”

The details were slowly coming together, and for a few minutes they discussed the logistics of making sure it would stay upright and support the weight of the shelves as well as a quilt. As they talked, Daniel went to watch a new colt play in the grass outside.

“It’s strange to see Linda’s son,” Solomon said, nodding toward Daniel, who was standing within view with his foot on a fence. “He looks like her.”

“Yah, I know,” Johannes agreed. Daniel had Linda’s sandy blond hair and her soulful eyes. He had her grin, too, when he was just about to laugh at something. It made Johannes miss his oldest sister. “The older Daniel gets, the more he looks like our side of the family.”

Johannes crossed his arms over his chest, his mind moving back to the house where the women were working. Solomon was getting married, and Johannes couldn’t help the twinge of envy he felt. In a matter of weeks, Solomon would have his wife in his arms and would start growing that married beard. Solomon, who’d jumped the fence and been incarcerated. It hardly seemed fair.

“You don’t approve of me marrying Lizzie, do you?” Sol asked, his voice low.

“What?” Joannes turned toward his cousin. “I didn’t say that.”

“You don’t have to. I can see it, and you’re not different from anyone else,” Solomon replied. “You think she’d be better off with someone else.”

“I think—” Johannes was silent for a moment, wondering what he could safely say. “I think if you marry her, you’d better stay on the straight and narrow. You’re choosing the Amish life—for life.”

“I’m choosing her for life,” Solomon said. “And that’s the easy part.”

Johannes nodded. Sol was in love—it was plenty obvious. And Elizabeth felt the same way. And Solomon had found his way to belong ... Johannes didn’t begrudge people a life together.

“I’m happy for you,” Johannes said, and he paused. “And seeing as you’re just about one of Lovina’s family, I might as well tell you that Lovina wants me to take her to where she used to work in Erindale.”

Sol’s eyebrows went up. “Does she remember it?”

“I think she’s trying to,” he replied.
