Chapter 37

Quest

“How do I make you feel?” I asked, taking Maverick’s hand in mine.

We’d been at the hotel long enough to shower and get comfortable before I asked that question, and the sound of her grumbling under her breath made me laugh.

“Confused as hell,” Maverick admitted, and I couldn’t even blame her. “In the car you made it clear that you weren’t going to be responsible for me catching feelings for you because you were leaving. That you wanted me to enjoy you now but to prepare for you to leave later. How else am I supposed to feel?”

“Aside from that,” I clarified, laying on my side so I could look down at her, and as soon as I did she smiled. All that shit she was talking dissolved immediately the second our eyes linked. Her hand went to my neck and she used it to pull my lips down to hers, but we didn’t get deep. That was a risk I wasn’t willing to take right now. The point of getting the room was for her to be able to talk freely without having to worry about us being disturbed. I didn’t want tonight to lead to sex.

Not that I didn’t want to have sex with her.

I wanted to have sex with her.

A lot.

“How do I make you feel,” I asked again, running my finger across her heart. “Here.” Her eyes briefly closed, but she opened them when I moved my hand from her chest to her temple. “Not here.”

I felt like I was setting myself up knowing how easily her words could get to me, but I had to ask.

“Are you sure you want me to answer that?”

“No. Yes.”

She laughed, but I was dead ass serious. I was sure I wanted her to, but I felt like I didn’t need her to. That didn’t keep me from wanting to know. If her answer messed with my head, like I was sure it probably would, I would just have to deal with it.

“Which one is it, Quest?”

Those eyes. Her smile. I could get lost in her smile.

“Yes.”

Maverick nodded but she didn’t speak right away. Her hand went to my shoulder and she squeezed it before running it down my arm. She connected her hand with mine again, and I hated how good something so simple felt.

It didn’t surprise me that instead of her actually answering me she recited a poem, but I wasn’t expecting her words to hit me as deep as they did.

“You conditioned yourself not to love me?

Refusing to free fall into my abyss

Afraid that I wouldn't or I couldn't catch your drift

But that wasn't it

I wanted you to feel precise, move sure, think swift about the conditioning of two hearts but one throne

Not scared to be alone, but scared to feel alone, to dream a clone of my true inner self

I know my worth of wealth but still...”

Her fingers slid across my cheek in that way she did that always relaxed me and almost put me to sleep.
