I was finishing up administering the medications on the New Aristocrat with Salamander. Each day that passes, worries about their outcome. Dog’s condition is rotting by the day, and since I was told that there’s nothing I could do, I… I can’t help but feel rage at how powerless I am. If only I had been there sooner for them. After they all left the infirmary before thanking me,

I got close to Salamander and asked, “How long does Dog have left?”

She sighed as she washed her hands and said, “Advanced lung cancer isn’t something to scoff at, my Virtuoso.”

“I know that,” I said while biting my lip angrily. “If it wasn’t for those rotten Elder Aristocrats. Children begging for their lives… they didn’t care.”

“Would you care if the Elder Aristocrats begged?” she asked me.

I scoffed, then said, “Not in a million years. They wanted a monster—a monster is what they will get.” I felt a hand on my shoulder.

It was Salamander, who said, “You’re not as blighted as you think, my Virtuoso. There is still hope for your end.” She began watering the plants in the infirmary. Salamander always had a motherly aura surrounding her. She is a year younger than me, though she is still the oldest New Aristocrat if I don’t count Lucky Light.

“Maybe not, but I need to believe I am if I’m to reach the ending I want.”

“The New Aristocrats know that the queen of the night is not affected by blight. As our founding flower, you will see through whatever you put your mind on, my Virtuoso. But I am speaking on behalf of every one of us when I say that your heavenly heart is worth more than anything.”

“I never asked to be the leader, Salamander—not that I regret it.”

“And that’s exactly what makes you perfect. You were chosen to be our leader, my Virtuoso. You are a cactus flower—you have dozens of admirable qualities about you, but being safe and inviting has never been your specialty; perhaps that’s what led you on this inevitable path. You never found your gardener to care for you, but you still have some time left. Think on that, my Virtuoso.” She is always trying to help everyone for nothing in return. Even I told my New Aristocrats that if they wanted my help, they would have to work for me, but Salamander does it for nothing, and I don’t understand why. I never asked for her past, but I respect her privacy since she hasn’t asked much about mine either. (I wish Lucky were this cooperative.)

“Love, huh… if there’s one thing I learned throughout all the Lethal Hearts, it’s that love makes people do crazy things. Such a complicated emotion for such simple-minded people; it baffles me how humanity still roams the earth.” I have tried to understand love ever since Nikolai died. If I understood it, I thought I could forget about it or simulate it with someone else, yet the thought of being with anyone makes me want to vomit.
