As the saying went, there was no rest for the weary. Amaya tossed and turned in her bed, her ear tuned to the ongoings below. Thankfully, Grandfather was fine and had only been concerned as to why Grandmama had leapt from their bed in such a panic. As the protector of his wife and family for so many years, it was likely difficult for Grandfather in his weakened state to be unable to effectively shield those he loved from danger.

Amaya stood and peered out the window at the street below. A drunkard plodded down the middle of the street, bellowing an off-tune ditty. He stumbled, his bottle of whiskey teetering in his hand as he did so.

A dog wandered along the boardwalk, its nose to the ground. And further down the street, a man on a horse stalled, his attention on the buildings on either side of the street.

Who had robbed them?

Poplar Springs had long been known for its lawlessness. She was reminded of Russell and his horrific death. But even before that, crime was rampant in the Wyoming town. She’d been somewhat shielded from the corruption while living in Bowman—and residing outside of town on the ranch where her pa worked.

And her parents desired to move to Poplar Springs once Pa recovered from his accident?

Amaya shook her head. If one couldn’t even feel safe in a mercantile, where could they feel safe?

Several hours later, the light of dawn peeked through the curtained window. The aroma of Basque potato and pepper tortilla waffled through the air. Amaya buttoned her shirtwaist and pulled her hair into a bun. She’d fetch the sheriff right after breakfast.

Sheriff Winslow was riding with two of the other four deputies in a search for a gang who was wanted in Wyoming and Nebraska and who’d been seen in the area two days ago. Deputy John Mark Eliason, who’d stayed behind with one other deputy to keep watch on things in town, followed Amaya back to the mercantile.

“Do you know of anyone who would want to do this?” he asked as he perused the scene minutes later.

“No,” said Grandmama. “We don’t have any enemies that we know of.”

Grandfather attempted to utter a string of words. Frustrated, he gritted his teeth and tried once more. “They—how get in?”

John Mark rested a hand on Grandfather’s shoulder. “Apparently, they were able to gain access to the store through the door.”

“Bu—but locked.”

“Yes, I’m sure I locked the door,” said Grandmama, her face contorted with concern.

Grandmama had one other time forgotten to lock the door when she closed up the mercantile for the evening. Amaya had discovered it, locked it, and didn’t say a word to Grandmama. No sense in upsetting her with all she had on her mind as of late. Could she have perchance forgotten once again? Or believed she had done so but was mistaken?
