Abby’s mother had looked disappointed when she told her she couldn’t join her for dinner, but when she said it was because she was going out to a restaurant, her mom’s mouth tilted up into a small smile, a knowing look on her face.

She didn’t ask who she was going out with, but based on her mom’s amused, wise expression, Abby had a feeling she had guessed correctly.

In any case, as soon as she came back downstairs all dressed up and smelling of perfume, it would be obvious she wasn’t going out for a casual girls’ night—not necessarily because she would be more dressed-up, but because she couldn’t get her body to calm down.

Her mother would see the nervousness and excitement all over her and know it wasn’t because she was going to meet a gaggle of girls—it was a man that had her almost jumping out of her skin, and there was only one man she couldn’t seem to stop mentioning.

Abby’s stomach growled at the smell of home-cooked food, but she reminded herself to save space for the restaurant.

She hadn’t had time to thoroughly research the place, but she assumed Dan, as a wealthy man, probably wouldn’t take her just anywhere. Which made her think carefully about how to dress.

Though she tried to approach the date casually and not think too hard about what to wear and how to do her hair, she couldn’t help it—she agonized over her look until she ran out of time.

She settled on a form-fitting, plum-colored dress that reached her knees, and three-inch heels. She dressed herself up with jewelry and used a bit more makeup than usual—adding more color to her face with eyeshadow, blush, and bright lipstick.

She kept her hair in the twist-out style she’d worn earlier that day, knowing there was no way she’d have time to straighten it properly, and when she took a final look in the mirror, she found herself pleased with what she saw.

Though she had every intention of taking things slowly and being very careful on this first date of theirs, she had slipped on a set of matching lacy underwear, grooming every part she felt needed to be groomed.
