Chapter Five

Carter

I was having lunch with my friend, Jonas, but my mind wasn’t here at all. I was thinking about the gallery opening last night. Sean was a phenomenal artist. He was going to be a huge success. I couldn’t wait for the exhibit to be over so I could pick up the painting I bought. I would hang it on the wall of my home office.

“Carter,” Jonas said sharply.

“What?”

“You haven’t heard a word I said.”

“Sorry, you’re right. My mind is elsewhere.”

“And where is elsewhere?”

I looked at my oldest friend. He’d been my roommate in college and my friend when I didn’t have a dime, so I hadn’t hesitated to bring him on board when the company took off. “Do you believe in love at first sight?”

“What? Love at first sight? No. I believe in lust at first sight, and I guess, sometimes, that turns in to love. Why, do you?” He looked at me with a mixture of concern and amusement.

“I didn’t. I thought it was ridiculous, stupid even, to think you could fall in love with someone so quickly, but now I’m not so sure.”

“Okay, so who is this person that has you so twisted up?”

“His name is Sean.”

“The barista you’ve been driving across town every morning to see?” he asked with a knowing grin.

“Who told you that?”

“Robin may have mentioned it in passing one morning last week when you were late for a meeting.”

“Yes, he’s a barista. But he’s so much more. He’s sweet and funny, and sassy as hell. He’s an upcoming artist, and Jonas, his art is unbelievably good, and I don’t think he cares one way or another about the money.”

“You’re smiling just thinking about him. I think I need to meet this unicorn of the gay world. I assume he’s fantastic in bed, as well.”

“I don’t know, I haven’t slept with him,” I said with a shrug.

“You haven’t had sex with him, but think you may be in love? What if you aren’t compatible. What if he exclusively tops? What if he needs to put on a puppy mask and bark in order to get off?”

“Well, Jonas, I guess I’d buy him a puppy mask, and I seriously doubt he only tops, but if that is the case, we’ll figure it out.”
