CHAPTER FIVE

Walking in the garden Paulina felt lonely.

She had slipped away from The Palace knowing that she was not wanted. The flowers brilliant in the sunshine made her feel homesick for Altauss.

She wished that she was brave enough to suggest that she should go home since it was quite obvious that even her usefulness to the Princess had come to an end.

The day after they had arrived at Tsarskoe-Selo, the Grand Duke’s three sisters came and made such a fuss of Margarita that Paulina felt that they almost elbowed her out of their way.

The sisters were all young, very attractive and very vivacious.

It was obvious that they welcomed their brother’s marriage enthusiastically and Paulina felt secretly that they were relieved to be rid of the Frenchwoman he had been attached to for so long.

Margarita, always responsive to any kindness and affection, was growing daily more and more in love with her future husband and she found his sisters enchanting.

“How lucky I am,” she said to Paulina, “to have such charming in-laws. I have always been afraid that the relations of any man I married would resent me and, if they were women, would be perhaps a little jealous.”

The three sisters complimented Margarita and convinced her that the marriage had not only their approval but that all the Grand Duke’s other relations were delighted that he was to be married.

They had brought with them the most fantastic jewels as presents and Margarita arrayed herself in them not only when they were there but when she was alone with Paulina.

There was a set of sapphires that was particularly becoming, especially the tiara, which was large enough to be a crown and a necklace of diamonds Paulina thought must be worth a King’s ransom.

“How could I imagine,” Margarita asked in awestruck tones, “that I would ever own anything so excitingly beautiful?”

Paulina was sure that the Princess was exactly the wife that the Vladirvitchs had wanted for the Head of their Family and it was only possible to express their gratitude and relief at the marriage by giving the bride extravagant and luxurious presents.

One was a cape of sables, which was as fine as anything owned by the Czarina, besides other furs that would be very necessary for Margarita to wear when the winds from Siberia brought the intense cold to St. Petersburg which everyone dreaded.

‘I shall be home by then,’ Paulina thought and was glad to think that her time as Lady-in-Waiting was coming to an end.

In the morning, after she had breakfasted with Margarita, a Court runner brought a letter from the Grand Duke to the boudoir.

The Princess opened the letter, started to read what her fiancé had written with a little smile on her lips, then gave a cry which startled Paulina.

“What is it?” she asked.

“Wonderful, wonderful news!” the Princess replied. “Alexander has a new appointment and what do you think it is?”

“Tell me,” Paulina begged.

“He is to go to Odessa to be Deputy Governor to Prince Voronzov.”

Margarita drew in her
