Eight

The Pi Beta Alpha meeting was held in Casey's Place the next afternoon. All of the sorority sisters were present, except Elizabeth Wakefield and Enid Rollins, who thought the sorority was more of an excuse to socialize than anything else, and who were members in name only. After the meeting, everyone sat around eating and talking. Caroline had ordered a chocolate milk shake, but she wasn't paying much attention to it. She was reading Adam's latest letter to the group of girls who had gathered around her booth. Her face was flushed with pleasure. No one had ever cared about her at a sorority meeting before, but that day she was the center of attention!

"Sorry to interrupt," Lila Fowler said suddenly, breaking through the attentive audience, "but Jessica and I need to talk to Caroline for a second."

Uh-oh, Caroline thought unhappily. Here comes trouble. Her audience dispersed, and Lila slid next to her in the booth while Jessica sat on the other side.

"I was just reading Adam's letter again," Caroline said uneasily, looking from Jessica to Lila and back to Jessica again.

"Isn't that a coincidence!" Lila exclaimed. "We were just talking about him. We were wondering when he's coming to visit."

"I'm not sure," Caroline said nervously. "Soon, though."

"How soon?" Jessica asked. "Sometime in the next year?"

"Of course," Caroline answered, biting her lip.

"In the next six months?" Lila asked.

"Sure."

"How about in the next month?" said Jessica.

Caroline finally saw where the conversation was leading to. "Uh—I don't know."

"You've got to see him sometime," Jessica pressed on. "Unless—maybe you have no intention of seeing him at all."

"Of course I do. I'm going up to visit him this weekend," she blurted out.

"Good," said Lila, pleased with Caroline's response. "That leaves the next weekend free for him to come here. We're going to throw a party for him."

Caroline gasped. "You don't have to do that, Lila."

"It would be our pleasure," Lila said. "Sort of our way of saying welcome to Sweet Valley."

Caroline hesitated. "Adam's kind of shy. I don't think he'd like the idea of a party."

"Come on," Jessica said. "He hardly comes across as shy in those letters."

"But you don't really know him," Caroline insisted.

"Don't I?" Jessica pressed. "You've read me all his letters. I feel like I know him pretty well. And I'm sure he'd love a party in his honor."

"Gee, Jess, I really don't know," Caroline mumbled.

"What's wrong, Caroline?" Lila asked, pretending to be surprised. "I can't believe you'd want to turn down the opportunity to star at your own party. It's the chance of a lifetime."

"I know," Caroline said miserably.

"So what's the problem?" Lila pressed.

"Well—"

"There is none. It's all set," Jessica finished for her.

Lila added, "We'll have it at my house. We'll invite everyone. It'll be great."

"Sure. It'll be fun," Caroline said weakly.

"So how's next weekend? Will Adam be able to make it then?" Lila asked.

Caroline shrugged. If only they'd let her alone!

"Ask him in your next letter. I guarantee he'll say yes," Jessica said.

Caroline watched as Jessica and Lila got up and sauntered over to the counter to order ice-cream sundaes.
