Laughter filled the air, disturbing Rupert who was going over an accumulation of papers in his study. Presuming the racket to be caused by unruly stable hands or the gardener’s lads, he yanked open the French doors and took one step onto the terrace, ready to castigate the rascals.

His jaw dropped in shock when he spotted his daughter and her brand-new governess dancing about the grass with nothing on their feet. His first instinct was to rebuke both — Amelia for her juvenile behaviour and Cate for ignoring his rules about shoes and stockings.

Something made him pause.

Amelia was singing a nonsensical ditty, something about lavender, and Cate was jumping over goodness knows what, grass stalks probably. Their exhilaration in so simple a game brought a smile to his lips. What was the harm? Disinclined to ruin their fun, Rupert left them to it.
