Chapter Fifteen

Big G

“I’ve always been good with computers and shit. When I was sixteen one of my older cousins got me into some dumb shit. Making easy money by hacking people’s security systems and running up in their houses. One night we fucked up and ran up in the wrong house,” I paused to take a deep breath because I hated talking about this shit. If there was a way for me to go back and change anything about my life, it would have been that fateful night.

Sitting in the passenger seat of my older cousin West’s Crown Vic, we watched as the couple packed up their luggage and kids before backing out of the driveway. We were at the edge of the community where there was a small parking lot and no cameras. As soon as they were off the block I got to work, hacking into their security system. I checked the cameras to watch the interior of the home and there was no sign of anyone else in the home. As time dwindled down the lights in the surrounding homes turned off, signaling that the neighbors were turning in for the evening.

“You ready cuz?” West questioned, passing me a ski mask.

“Let me disable the alarms and kill the cameras and it’s on. I spotted a few jewelry boxes upstairs in the closet of the master bedroom,” I explained, clicking around on my MacBook.

This was the tenth job for me and West and the shit was running like a well oiled machine. West worked for a lawn company that had a bunch of houses in a few affluent areas. The wives were home alone and chatty as fuck, always giving up their business as a way to hold conversations. As soon as they mentioned a vacation we were on their asses.

“We good,” I closed my MacBook and slid the ski mask over my face.

Exiting the car with our guns tucked, we rushed down the block to the home. West did his thing using his tools to unlock the backdoor while I watched our surroundings. Within a minute we were waltzing into the home and through the dining room.

“Let’s grab the jewelry boxes first then sweep the house,” West commanded and I nodded my head.

Ascending the stairs, in the blink of an eye my entire world changed.

POW! POW! POW!

Three gunshots rang out from the top of the stairs and I was looking up at a man holding a gun. The shit caught me off guard because I thought the house was empty. He swung the gun in my direction and pulled the trigger three additional times but the gun clicked repeatedly. West’s limp body slumped up against the rails and I dropped my gun to pull him down and examine his wounds.

“Sir, please call the ambulance! I promise I won’t hurt you, I threw my gun down. Just help me save my cousin, please,” I pleaded, fear evident in my voice as I applied pressure to the three bullet wounds.
