It’s been a little over a month since I brought Shayla to Miami from Tampa. Slowly, her physical wounds are healing and the light that I saw in her eyes when I first met her is coming back. Kurt really did a number on her, and if I had it my way, he’d be six feet under. But for now, six months in the county jail would have to do.

I’m doing my damnedest to convince her that my home is her home and that it’s not necessary for her to get her own place, but that woman is stubborn and determined to prove that she can stand on her own two feet again. I respect that, but I don’t like it. I can’t help but feel that she’s making me suffer a little because of the things that Kurt did to her.

Tonight, I’m gonna surprise her and take her back to the restaurant that we went to the day that we met. It’s nothing fancy but I want to do something to get her out of the house. She’s been consistently turning down my offers to take her out because her arm was in a sling and the bruises she had were still quite visible. I’m hoping that now that she’s almost back to normal, she won’t turn me down.

“Shayla, where are you?” I yelled as I came in from the garage. I just got back from the mall getting her an outfit for tonight.

“I’m in your office,” she replied back. That seems to be her favorite room in the house this last week. She’s been in overdrive looking for a job and an apartment.

“How are you feeling?” I walked in behind her and kissed her temple before massaging her shoulders.

“Fine. I think I’m gonna just go to a temp agency and see if they can find a good placement for me. Some of these job descriptions are so intimidating.”

“Baby, they write those things that way to discourage people who aren’t serious. You are more than qualified so don’t be afraid to apply,” I encouraged her.

“I know, baby. I think I would just feel more comfortable going through an agency.”

“Do what you feel is best then. Don’t forget, I can always call my boy Steven and see if he has any openings,” I reminded her.

“No!” she said quickly. “I want to do this my way and on my own.”

“Calm down, baby.” I turned the chair around that she was sitting in and squatted down to her level. “I need you to know that I’m here for you and that you don’t have to do this shit alone. I’m not Kurt. I’m not here to tear you down. I want to help build you up. Okay?”

“I’m sorry, baby. I know you’re not anything like him. I’m just getting a little overwhelmed. Thank you for putting up with my craziness.” She leaned forward and pecked my lips.

“I have an idea. How about you let me take you out? Just dinner, nothing fancy. I wanna get you out of the house for a couple of hours.
