âAsk her once, ask her twice
Ask her pretty and ask her nice
adapted from a square dance call, in case you are interested, maestro.â
âGlad to hear laughter in your voice. From the first glance I had at your face when I came in I expected that late or soon you would burst into tears on my shoulder. To return to my question,â he poised a pencil above an order pad, âcoffee now or later?â
âWith my luncheon, please.â
He handed the slip to a pink-frocked white-capped waitress a-quiver with thrilled curiosity.
âAnd, Susie, serve the coffee hot in a pot.â
âSure Mr. Sanford, I know how you like it. And will your young lady take cream?â
âWill my young lady take cream?â He chuckled. âYouâre not committing yourself to being my young lady by answering, Miss Adair.â
âI would like cream with the coffee.â As the waitress glided away he laughed.
âAs you could see, you have provided the food for romance for Susie. She is deeply concerned at my bachelor state.â
âDo you never invite a woman to lunch?â
âNot here. My guests choose a more top-drawer locale.â
âHow did you know I came here? You did know, didnât you? It wasnât coincidental that you arrived a few minutes after I came in, was it?â
âNo.â He twisted a glass tumbler the exact shade of the red in the tablecloth and set the ice within it tinkling. âI was at the window of my office looking down at the street figuring on a problem when the frantic tooting of automobile horns drew my attention to a girl inâwhat color is your costume?â
âCouturiers have a name for itâblonde.â
âIn a blonde outfit even to shoulder bag and shoes, who was dodging and darting in front of the hoods of trucks, cars, and taxis. Each time she turned I caught a flash of pinkâyouâre a marked woman with those camellias. You wore them to the studio last evening, didnât you?â
âThatâs right.â
âTo continue the saga, I broke my own speed record through the outer office, ignoring my sobbing sister huddled behind a typewriter, ran down the stairs and at the risk of voiding my life insurance policy bucked the traffic and crossed the street.â He folded his arms on the table and leaned forward.
âHave you ever thought, Miss Adair, that there are a lot of less messy ways of ending it all than being crushed under wheelsâif that was your idea.â
âIt wasnât, of course it wasnât, equally of course the jaywalking stunt was a crazy impulse. I donât know why I did it. Letâs charge it up to brainstorm and get to the reason of the summons to your office. Is it to cancel the radio contract?â
âNo. Where did you pick up that fool idea? Susie is bearing down on us. Iâll explain later. Why are you taking off that corsage?â
âToo sensational for this hour and place.â
The waitress fairly tingling with secret understanding smiled at Wendy.
âIsnât there something else you would like, dear?â
âThank you, no. Wear these when you go off duty.â
Susie hesitantly took the camellias she offered, looked at Rolfe Sanford.
