Chapter 7

I heard the garage door open, and I took a few deep breaths as I waited for my wife to come in. I had not left the spot where Gina and I had our conversation because I was too angry to move. I unclenched my fist and felt the burn from my nails that had almost pierced the skin. I did not want the situation to get out of control, so I promised myself to be calm and to be in charge of my actions. The last thing I wanted was to have regrets in the morning or to do or say something that I could not take back.

The door opened to the dining room and I noticed that Haley was not with her.

“Where is Haley?”

“Oh my God!” she jumped holding on to her chest. “You scared me.”

“Where is Haley?” I asked and waited until she made her way to me.

As soon as she got close, I was not sure what she saw, but she stopped.

“S-she is at my parents.”

“Why?”

“She was having so much fun with her cousins and she asked me to stay. Is that OK?” she asked nervously.

“You didn't ask before you did it.”

“I was coming to surprise you...to tell you that we have the house to ourselves.”

“Please sit. I have to talk to you.”

“Sure,” she said quickly and took a seat at the far end of the couch.

“We have always had honesty as the foundation of our marriage. It was a requirement and the bedrock on which we built this beautiful life for our family. Do you agree?”

“Y-yes. I agree.”

“After you left, I realized Gina was in the house. I found her in my office and asked her to come to the living room. I knew you might not be happy with it, but she is my whole past and I wished that one day she could just be my friend.”

“Absolutely not.”

“I figured that would be your position, but I wanted to explain to you why she was necessary in my life…”

“She was your lover.”

“Whom I have no memory of.”

“But she does.”

I was happy that the conversation had taken this turn because it caused me to cool down. Being on the defensive gave me time to cool down.

“As we spoke, I got limited answers to my time at the agency and how we met. It was just a little here and there but enough to add to what I already knew to paint a picture of my past and who Gina was. Some direct questions, she would not answer. I questioned whether she was lying and she showed me her eyes. I saw mostly what we were like together and I was so deep into it that it was difficult to tell what was her memory and what was reality. I didn't realize she was kissing me…”

“What did you say?”

“Gina kissed me,” I replied and her face became red with anger.

“And...and what did you do?”

“I almost killed her. I told her that I was in love with you and I never wanted to see her again.
