My first hour on Inishmór was fairly disheartening. Nobody in the village had ever heard of my friend’s friend’s uncle, nor had they heard of a cottage with a door that needed no key. The barman told me further that although he wasn’t familiar with secret doors and magical cottages, there was a B&B just down the lane.

In an instant I was back out in the rain, fighting uphill against the wind in search of the B&B, which turned out to be very pleasant. The kindly owner ushered me into her parlour and sat me in front of the fire. She poured cups of tea and produced a plate of biscuits. After a few sips I felt completely at home; so much so that I soon stumbled upstairs to my room to snuggle between the crisp white sheets of a most inviting bed.

I have often found that nothing can compare to a soft, warm bed on a vicious winter’s day. Howling winds and drenching rains are nothing when you’re tucked safely beneath a heavy blanket and a pile of hand-knitted quilts. As my head sank deep into the pillow, it seemed I had turned the proverbial corner after enduring one of the worst weeks of my life. I was on the road to rest, relaxation and recovery.
