Chapter Ten
âIs that the last of it?â
David sent a hopeful look to Laura Dean. The cute blonde was Annaâs secretary, but she was also a dynamo who did a little bit of everything around the COTD offices. And this morning, sheâd had David hopping with all her orders and requests to get over one hundred care boxes taped up and ready to take to the shipping company.
âI do believe thatâs it, sir,â Laura said, grinning over at David. âYou sure worked up a sweat.â
âIâm old and I think Iâve got early arthritis,â David said as he reached for his water bottle. âThat was some kind of job, packing all those boxes.â
Laura nodded as she checked off things on her list. âTell me about it. We do it at least once a month.â
âAnd take care of all the other things around here, too,â David said, impressed. When he heard voices in one of the rooms down the hall, he glanced at Laura. âWhat kind of meeting are they having back there?â
Laura put down her clipboard. âYouth counseling for teenagers who have a parent in the war, or worse, have lost a parent in the war. Sometimes both parents. Itâs hard for them, but the surviving spouse or family doesnât always know how to handle a teenagerâs grief. So we offer them a quiet place just to vent.â
David wiped his brow, thinking about the young twins Caitlyn was now raising for that very reason. âWow, I guess I havenât thought much about that. Wish Iâd had someone to talk to when I was young.â
Laura smiled over at him. âWe counsel adults, too, sir.â
Surprised, David shrugged. âIâm doing okay, thanks. I talk to Chaplain Steve a lot and Iâm trying to find the courage to get to know Annaâs mother a little better.â
Laura giggled at that. âMiss Olga is awesome. I mean, after all theyâve been through, she and Anna are such an inspiration to all of us.â
David had witnessed Lauraâs loyalty to her employer as evident in how hard she worked to make sure Annaâs days ran like clockwork. âYou try to shield Anna from a lot, donât you?â
âThatâs my job,â Laura said, bobbing her head. âAnna gave me a chance when I was in a bad way and for that, Iâll always be grateful. Working here doesnât pay as much as I could make out in the regular world, but I donât care. I intend to work in nonprofit for the rest of my life and hope that after I finish college I can keep working with COTD in a different capacity.â
David let out a whistle then shook his head. âWhen did young people get so smart? Wish Iâd had my life figured out when I was your age.â
Laura frowned. âBut you did, didnât you? Youâve made a career out of the army, right?â
David shook his head again. âNo, more like the army made a career out of me. But I donât regret the time Iâve served.â
Laura looked up as she
