Chapter Ten

“Is that the last of it?”

David sent a hopeful look to Laura Dean. The cute blonde was Anna’s secretary, but she was also a dynamo who did a little bit of everything around the COTD offices. And this morning, she’d had David hopping with all her orders and requests to get over one hundred care boxes taped up and ready to take to the shipping company.

“I do believe that’s it, sir,” Laura said, grinning over at David. “You sure worked up a sweat.”

“I’m old and I think I’ve got early arthritis,” David said as he reached for his water bottle. “That was some kind of job, packing all those boxes.”

Laura nodded as she checked off things on her list. “Tell me about it. We do it at least once a month.”

“And take care of all the other things around here, too,” David said, impressed. When he heard voices in one of the rooms down the hall, he glanced at Laura. “What kind of meeting are they having back there?”

Laura put down her clipboard. “Youth counseling for teenagers who have a parent in the war, or worse, have lost a parent in the war. Sometimes both parents. It’s hard for them, but the surviving spouse or family doesn’t always know how to handle a teenager’s grief. So we offer them a quiet place just to vent.”

David wiped his brow, thinking about the young twins Caitlyn was now raising for that very reason. “Wow, I guess I haven’t thought much about that. Wish I’d had someone to talk to when I was young.”

Laura smiled over at him. “We counsel adults, too, sir.”

Surprised, David shrugged. “I’m doing okay, thanks. I talk to Chaplain Steve a lot and I’m trying to find the courage to get to know Anna’s mother a little better.”

Laura giggled at that. “Miss Olga is awesome. I mean, after all they’ve been through, she and Anna are such an inspiration to all of us.”

David had witnessed Laura’s loyalty to her employer as evident in how hard she worked to make sure Anna’s days ran like clockwork. “You try to shield Anna from a lot, don’t you?”

“That’s my job,” Laura said, bobbing her head. “Anna gave me a chance when I was in a bad way and for that, I’ll always be grateful. Working here doesn’t pay as much as I could make out in the regular world, but I don’t care. I intend to work in nonprofit for the rest of my life and hope that after I finish college I can keep working with COTD in a different capacity.”

David let out a whistle then shook his head. “When did young people get so smart? Wish I’d had my life figured out when I was your age.”

Laura frowned. “But you did, didn’t you? You’ve made a career out of the army, right?”

David shook his head again. “No, more like the army made a career out of me. But I don’t regret the time I’ve served.”
