There are secrets in all families.
—G EORGE FARQUHAR
I think a big part of why families can be so hard on each other is because we assume that just because we share DNA and may be called upon to part with a kidney someday, we should be carbon copies of one another. What fun would that be? I mean, other than the occasional 60 Minutes segment on the freak mirror-image lives of identical twins separated at birth, we could all benefit from a little difference.
In my family, for example, we three grown siblings vote differently in almost every election. None of us are of the same spiritual faith. And in many cases, our parenting styles are proving to be vastly different. So as you can imagine, there are several topics of discussion that could cause some friction. We’ve just learned over the years that even though we all started out the same, we’ve evolved differently.
We don’t, after all, put the same pressure on our friendships. Aren’t most social circles, well … sociable, because everyone benefits from the interaction of several different viewpoints? I mean, I love myself, but do I want to be in a room full of me’s? No thank you. I already know what my thoughts are. When I’m looking for company, I want to pick someone else’s brain, hear someone else sing, watch someone else get food stuck in their teeth. Otherwise, how boring!
Until the day that human cloning becomes commonplace—and oh, how I hope this sentence doesn’t seem antiquated one day—we all should try to remember that families are groups of individuals, much like social circles, people who, hopefully, enjoy each other but don’t expect to see a mirror image of themselves.
