Chapter 19

Lilith awoke with her head lying on something unyielding. It wasn't the most comfortable pillow she'd ever slept on, but it was warm. She snuggled closer, then her eyes flew open as memory came crashing back. Cautiously looking around, she found herself nose to well-defined shoulder muscle. Ranove's bicep served as her uncomfortable pillow, and his arm cradled her, holding her close to his body even in sleep. One of his wings lay beneath her and curved partially around her. His smoky musk scent surrounded her, and she could still taste the intoxicating spice of his mouth.

Though it was dark in the room, she could discern the curve of his shoulder and the fact that he lay with his head turned away from her, his horns curving on the pillow above her. Some of the coarse strands of his hair lay beneath her cheek on his bicep.

When she lifted her head and tried to move out of his embrace, his arm tightened for a moment and then released her. He turned towards her, and the lamps began to glow again, slowly brightening the room. As her eyes adjusted, she saw him watching her. Uncertainty and embarrassment gripped her. It had taken every bit of courage she’d had to initiate the intimacy between them the previous night. The experience had surpassed anything she’d ever felt, but nothing changed the fact that he was still as alien to her as he had been. Her body might be acquainted with him, but it would take more time for her mind to feel the same.

And now comes that awkward morning-after conversation….

Meeting his eyes was difficult. “Good morning.” Her words seemed inadequate after the intimacy they’d just shared.

“It is evening.” His voice was raspy with sleep, but he said the words with a slight smile on his lips.

“Oh. I see.” She sat up on her knees and tucked her hair behind one ear, looking away from his dark eyes. This left her gaze resting on his body, which proved no less distracting and unnerving. “Did you… um… sleep well?”

Muscles rippled as he sat up, his eyes never leaving her. She watched in fascination as his wings adjusted around him, the bones halfway down the wings bending at his waist like knuckles so that he could sit up.

“It has been a long time since I have slept so well.” He lifted a hand to brush a lock of hair away from her cheek.

She turned her face into his palm. Her gaze fell upon the spike jutting from his elbow. As if the wings and horns aren't reminder enough of how alien he is. She watched her own hand reach out and touch the hard protrusion.

His gaze followed her hand as she traced her fingers along the spike. “There is not much feeling in my spurs. I can think of better places for your hand.”

She gasped and snatched her hand back. Embarrassed at the realization of what she’d been doing, she blushed and stammered, “I-I’m sorry, I didn't mean to—”

He laughed his wicked laugh, the one that she felt all the way to her toes.
