No Hawthorne expert (or learned reader) would disagree with this verdict. But the surgeons’ final denouement from a late twentieth-century medical perspective may come as a surprise to the reader unfamiliar with the current field of plastic surgery. Mulliken and Young leave no room for doubt that “[t]oday, medical science still does not have a satisfactory treatment for Georgiana’s vascular birthmark” (21). But it is this concession that entails these surgeons’ scientific avowal that they

must continue, in a scientific spirit, to find remedies. We cannot accept the laboratory technician’s view that a birthmark should not be removed, a Calvinistic orthodoxy of unquestioned acceptance of man’s imperfection. However, Hawthorne’s tale also instructs us never to lose human contact as we struggle to care for patients with vascular anomalies.
