CHAPTER 7
THERE WAS SOMETHING UNNERVING ABOUT seeing her mother in a hospital bed.
Watching as a nurse checked the IV in Francineâs arm, Angie realized she couldnât recall a time in her life when her mother had been sick, beyond the occasional cold. Francine Hunter had always enjoyed a robust good health, but now she looked vulnerable, even frail.
âKnock, knock.â John Gunn poked his head into the room. âAre you receiving visitors this morning?â
Francineâs smile revealed genuine gladness. âOh, Pastor John. Do come in. I didnât expect to see you today. You didnât have to drive all the way down here.â
âI know, but I wanted to. I thought you might like prayer before they take you to surgeryâ He glanced toward the chair in the corner where Angie sat. âGood to see you again.â
Angie nodded as she rose to her feet. âAnd you.â She was grateful he hadnât mentioned her absence from church yesterday sheâd already felt her motherâs disappointment over it.
John walked to the side of the hospital bed. He patted the back of Francineâs right hand, where it lay atop the thin white blanket. âAre you feeling anxious, my friend?â
âA little.â
âRemember what the Scriptures tell us, Francine. Jesus healed the sick and fulfilled the word of the Lord through Isaiah, who said, âHe took our sicknesses and removed our diseases.ââ
Angieâs mother visibly relaxed.
âLetâs pray, shall we?â John looked at Angie again. âCare to join us?â
Even as she was about to shake her head in refusal, Angie stepped toward the opposite side of the hospital bed. She did her best not to look surprised by her own actions as she took hold of her motherâs left hand.
The pastorâs voice was gentle as he prayed, and yet there was something powerfulâand mysteriousâin the words he spoke. Angie felt them wash over, through, and around her. They shook her in an odd yet comforting way.
âAmen,â John said at last, and Angieâs mother echoed with a softer, âAmen.â
Before Angie could form the word, a nurse announced from the doorway, âWeâre ready for you now, Mrs. Hunter.â
Angie opened her eyes and met her motherâs gaze. âIâll be right here when you get back.â She bent down and kissed her on the forehead. âIâ¦I love you, Mom.â
âI love you, too, dear. Donât worry about a thing.â Her expression was serene. âThe Lord holds me in the palm of his hand.â
Angie stepped backward, out of the way of the orderlies. A minute or so later, she felt a lump forming in her throat as her mother was wheeled from the room. She wished sheâd said she loved her one more time.
âIf youâll come with me,â the nurse said, glancing between Angie and the pastor, âIâll show you where the waiting room is.â
