Brynne

After the heat ended, Brynne slept for two days straight. Liam stayed at the house and worked from home, although he still seemed more sluggish than usual. Eventually, they were both back to normal, and Liam went back to work, although he seemed reluctant to leave her.

Brynne used her time at home to research what pregnancy was like for humans, even though it might not apply to her. She also got to know Clara and Juliana better. Clara was a teacher who was currently staying at home with her kids. Juliana was an accountant who was currently working part-time after her baby had been born. Both of them were happy to tell Brynne all about their pregnancies. They had both breastfed their babies, which made Brynne wonder if she should stay an extra three to six months after the hatchling was born so that she could breastfeed the baby.

Two weeks went by, and she had plenty to fill her days. She spent the evenings exploring Cedar Lake with Liam. Sometimes, he acted more like a boyfriend or doting husband then someone who had hired her as a surrogate to carry his baby, but she decided to enjoy the attention while she could.

Fourteen days after her heat ended, her stomach felt a little bit queasy. Could that be it? Could she be carrying Liam’s child already? He’d certainly done his best to get her pregnant during the heat, and she’d enjoyed the hell out of it—every second.

She’d heard from both Juliana and Clara that they used pregnancy tests from the pharmacy, and the results had been correct, so she knew the tests worked with humans who were pregnant with little shifters. They were both human, though, so could a test work with a shifter? She supposed it was worth a try. On the fifteenth day after her heat ended, she took the Lexus to the grocery store and bought a pregnancy test. She bought cereal and milk just to make sure the test box wasn’t glaringly obvious in case she ran into one of Liam‘s family members.

Brynne wondered if it was better to let Liam know she was taking the test and let him be there for the results. That hadn’t been in the contract. It might be nice to surprise him, too.

She read the instructions and then took the test. She waited five minutes and then looked down at the little window on the stick. There was a pink positive sign—she was pregnant.

Maybe she could convince Quinn to give her an ultrasound in a few weeks so that they could get a picture of the baby. She knew she wouldn’t need traditional prenatal care, but an ultrasound would be nice. Liam might want one to put one in the baby book.

Before Liam got home from work, she scoured the internet, looking for cute ways to tell him she was pregnant. Just because she was a surrogate and being paid to carry this baby didn’t mean they shouldn’t have the same cute announcements that everyone else did.
