Just to their right, a pit opened, driving straight down and deep into the desert. Torches littered the way down, illuminating a black stone surface at the very bottom. Open barrels and several crystal apparatuses had been placed in a circle on that gleaming onyx slab, and alarmingly, there appeared to be a spidering crack down its center.

As they climbed the scaffolding, the storm gathering up above them intensified. A gust of wind nearly knocked Zelli’s fake horns right off her head. She sealed her mouth shut against the hard blast of sand and bone grit. Skeletal sentinels, tall and frozen, dotted the ramps up the scaffolding. She heard urgent footsteps behind them, and then someone breathlessly rushed past.

“Ingrate,” Trill muttered, pulling back the elbow the man had brushed.

They caught up to him at the top of the scaffolding. Zelli’s legs ached from the climb. Behind her, she could hear Snabla’s claws dragging on the wood from exhaustion. The top of the tower was queasily high. Zelli told herself not to look down. When she looked ahead, however, she found herself staring straight at Elgred Morbide. The dragonborn lich was as loathsome as she remembered—his fluttering black-and-purple robe had been patched and repatched, torn by the sharp bite of his bony, clawed hands. A few dozen black scales clung desperately to his exposed draconic skull, green fire spitting from the empty pits of his eye sockets. The Nexus Marker, portal killer and all-purpose key, was perched in one palm.
