A knock at the door wakes me with a jump. I rub my eyes hard, feeling myself sweat profusely. I probably smell so bad… I wouldn’t know though. I can barely smell out of either nostril.

I slowly get to my feet, groaning as a massive pain shoots through my spine and forces me to bow over with a wince.

When I make it to the door, I am greeted immediately by the faintest smell of lavender. Crazy how I couldn’t smell myself a moment ago but I would be able to smell this woman through the smoke of a burning jungle if I had to.

My eyebrows scrunch together as she makes her way inside, eyeing me. I sluggishly move toward her after locking the door, slamming her tiny body into mine before pulling away quickly, not wanting to get her sick. I want to touch her, though, I think. “Hey, you.” She feels my head with the back of her hand and her eyes widen. “Oh, honey. You’re burning up.”

Honey.

I murmur something that doesn’t make sense even to me, sniffing and hoping I don’t have anything on my face. She shoves my shoulders and leads me to the couch. “Noooo.”

“Yessss.” she counters. She hands me a blanket and I slip underneath it. “You don’t look too good, Maxwell..” My nose scrunches together at the use of my full name. I should never have told her what it was even though she begged me for a solid hour.

Although, I do like that she’s the only one besides my family who knows..

“I know, I know.” I say, brushing the hair from her face with a lazy hand.

“Lie here. Let me go get you something to eat.” I hold onto her hand with a strong grip. “I’ll come back, I promise.”
