Nicole

I crave information. I never enter negotiations without knowing everything about my opponent. To me, every negotiation is a competition.

In business school, we’re taught that a win/win is the preferable outcome for any deal, but that’s bullshit. Someone is going to always end up with the better end of the deal. I prefer that someone to be Nicole Mack every single time. Unfortunately for Ray,

I don’t see this new iteration of our relationship any differently. Today I’m at my old high school Calhoun Prep to learn more about grown man Ray. I knew him as a young adult, and I’m learning things have changed. He cares more… about everything. I’m unannounced because I want to see him in his element while his guard is down.

Plus, he wanted to ensure I made it to the doctor’s office by 10:00 am. Now, he can escort me there.

It’s 8:00 am and first period is in full swing. As I walk the halls, I’m reminded of my prep school years. I hated high school. My mother’s family hated her, and my Black skin. Their offspring tried to make my life hell. My mother’s family is low country royalty. They reign unopposed over Colleton County and the City of Charleston. Likewise, their kids ran Calhoun Preparatory Academy, so anything I ever tried out for I never got. They slighted me for awards and teased relentlessly. I fought constantly, and once Judo was introduced into my life, I won every single one.

My Aunt Pearl introduced me when I was fifteen. She studied Judo as a college student at Amherst. They offered the class as an elective and she took it, thinking it would teach her self-defense. She’s practiced it for over fifty years, and she got me started. Not only did it teach me to fight, but it also taught me how to choose peace. I know how to neutralize opponents without hurting them. There have been so many men I’ve had to put in place over the years in clubs and on bad dates. They’re always shocked when they end up on their ass for touching mine without my expressed permission.

Once my classmates figured out I could whip their ass, they no longer teased me. Instead, they ignored me. But Symone and Ray were my two bright spots. Symone was my best friend, and Ray was my lover. With them by my side, I didn’t need anyone else.

According to Ray, he is still by my side. I don’t know if I totally believe him, even if I have no reason not to. But I think he’s hiding something or someone, he’s too good of a catch not to. Men chase me down and I’m not friendly at all. Ray Baines is beyond friendly. He’s fine, and he’s loaded. He will not fool me again. He married Taylor two years after I left, and I am convinced he had her on the side all along. I just can’t prove it. He got married way too fast.

I smile as students pass and wink at the gawking girls.
