CHAPTER SIXTEEN

“They’re called dildos,” Darius informed Justine casually.

How did the countess maintain the façade that this was a place of reform, when she displayed false penises on her library shelves? When salacious art decorated her walls? How could this be anything other than a pleasure house?

“They’re not for use.” Her companion took her by the elbow. “It’s for show.”

“That’s true of everything in this house, isn’t it?”

“Not quite. But there are layers of artifice. You decide how deeply you wish to delve.”

“I don’t want to delve any further. I only want to find what I need and go home.”

She had the disorienting feeling that what she needed to find wasn’t there. It never had been. But if it wasn’t, then what was she looking for?

Permission.

The thought landed like pugilist’s fist. The day she’d accepted that stupid invitation from the detective at John’s graveside, she’d been intrigued. But she hadn’t been honest enough to admit that she wanted to satisfy her own curiosity almost as much as she wanted Bella hanged.

Deep down, Justine wanted an excuse to stop feeling so alone, if only for one evening.

When was the last time anyone had touched her? The whisper of her maid’s fingertips against her back. Wrestling John’s prone form into his bed. That was all. No one had offered her an embrace at John’s funeral. They’d all left her standing there like a statue. Untouchable. The same feeling that had plagued her on the sidewalk outside Harrods.

Tonight, she hadn’t felt lonely at all. Here, she wasn’t isolated with her howling grief and desperate need for human connection. She was surrounded by people who touched easily, who laughed, who lived in the bodies they were given.

The living, lusty thing inside her that purred at Darius’ kisses was called desire. Until this moment, she would have sworn on a stack of Bibles that she didn’t have any such physical needs.

Justine edged around the trio on the couch, keeping her distance like one of them might bite if she got too close. The woman on hands and knees stopped sucking the seated man’s member long enough to catch her eye. She slid the man’s cock out of her mouth with a wet pop. Justine’s eyebrows scraped her mask as they arched.

“Want a turn?” the woman asked.

“Uh…” Justine actually considered it. She glanced at Darius, who shook his head. “No. I appreciate the invitation. Looks…erm…delicious.”

The group chuckled. Her face flamed. Definitely the wrong word choice.

“Perhaps we’ll join in later.” Darius slipped his arm around her waist and guided her toward the exit. His intervention gave her a chance to exhale and process the scene.

“Did I respond right?” she asked. “I’ve never been so shocked by anything in my life.”

“You said the same thing not half an hour ago.”

“This place is outrageous!” she hissed.

“That’s the appeal of the House of Virtue. I thought I’d explained that.”

“You did. I simply cannot believe this is how the aristocracy carries on.”

“Not everyone. Only the fastest set, and people with desires not easily met any other way.
