CHAPTER SIXTEEN
âTheyâre called dildos,â Darius informed Justine casually.
How did the countess maintain the façade that this was a place of reform, when she displayed false penises on her library shelves? When salacious art decorated her walls? How could this be anything other than a pleasure house?
âTheyâre not for use.â Her companion took her by the elbow. âItâs for show.â
âThatâs true of everything in this house, isnât it?â
âNot quite. But there are layers of artifice. You decide how deeply you wish to delve.â
âI donât want to delve any further. I only want to find what I need and go home.â
She had the disorienting feeling that what she needed to find wasnât there. It never had been. But if it wasnât, then what was she looking for?
Permission.
The thought landed like pugilistâs fist. The day sheâd accepted that stupid invitation from the detective at Johnâs graveside, sheâd been intrigued. But she hadnât been honest enough to admit that she wanted to satisfy her own curiosity almost as much as she wanted Bella hanged.
Deep down, Justine wanted an excuse to stop feeling so alone, if only for one evening.
When was the last time anyone had touched her? The whisper of her maidâs fingertips against her back. Wrestling Johnâs prone form into his bed. That was all. No one had offered her an embrace at Johnâs funeral. Theyâd all left her standing there like a statue. Untouchable. The same feeling that had plagued her on the sidewalk outside Harrods.
Tonight, she hadnât felt lonely at all. Here, she wasnât isolated with her howling grief and desperate need for human connection. She was surrounded by people who touched easily, who laughed, who lived in the bodies they were given.
The living, lusty thing inside her that purred at Dariusâ kisses was called desire. Until this moment, she would have sworn on a stack of Bibles that she didnât have any such physical needs.
Justine edged around the trio on the couch, keeping her distance like one of them might bite if she got too close. The woman on hands and knees stopped sucking the seated manâs member long enough to catch her eye. She slid the manâs cock out of her mouth with a wet pop. Justineâs eyebrows scraped her mask as they arched.
âWant a turn?â the woman asked.
âUhâ¦â Justine actually considered it. She glanced at Darius, who shook his head. âNo. I appreciate the invitation. Looksâ¦ermâ¦delicious.â
The group chuckled. Her face flamed. Definitely the wrong word choice.
âPerhaps weâll join in later.â Darius slipped his arm around her waist and guided her toward the exit. His intervention gave her a chance to exhale and process the scene.
âDid I respond right?â she asked. âIâve never been so shocked by anything in my life.â
âYou said the same thing not half an hour ago.â
âThis place is outrageous!â she hissed.
âThatâs the appeal of the House of Virtue. I thought Iâd explained that.â
âYou did. I simply cannot believe this is how the aristocracy carries on.â
âNot everyone. Only the fastest set, and people with desires not easily met any other way.
