Chapter Ten

On Wednesday evening, Rachel spooned cake batter into the cupcake holders. “I never should’ve told you about my new carrot cake recipe for cupcakes. It definitely takes more time.”

Katie covered the huge pan of macaroni salad before putting it in the refrigerator. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have put it on the list of choices for desserts. You look tired.”

“I’m proud of you doing so well with your catering business in such a short time, but I don’t know if I can keep this up with baking for you.” Rachel opened the oven door and slid the cupcakes into the preheated oven.

“I know Mamm won’t want you to quit working here.” Katie leaned against a countertop in the Weaver’s Bakery. “I only cater to one small business next week so I can do it myself.”

“Won’t you need me to help serve, though?”

“I’ll get Mary to help. It’d be hard for you to serve because it’s a breakfast meeting.” Katie gave her a concerned look.

“Ya. Mornings haven’t been good for me.” Rachel suspected she could be pregnant with the morning sickness and tiredness she was experiencing.

Katie straightened and grinned at her. “Oh my gosh, you’re pregnant. I’m going to be an aenti.”

Rachel shrugged. “I only missed one period. If I miss this month’s, I’ll buy a pregnancy test kit.”

“You should get one now.” Katie stared at her. “You don’t seem froh. I guess because you and Samuel haven’t been married long.”

After she sat on a chair, Rachel said, “I want to have a boppli. I know it’s a blessing if I am pregnant, but poor Ella has been wanting to get pregnant for two years. Samuel and I were just married. I know it’ll be hard for her to hear my news.”

“It’ll be hard for Ella to hear you’re having a baby already, but I think there’s more to it than you being worried about your sister-in-law’s reaction.” Katie rested her hand on Rachel’s shoulder. “I’m your best friend. You can tell me what’s wrong.”

“It’ll be another reason for Samuel to say he should start building our house this spring.” Rachel sighed. “I don’t want to move yet. I like taking care of everyone in my family.”

Katie grinned and took a seat next to her. “Or is it you don’t want to live in a house with just my bruder? He can be a boring person.”

Rachel laughed. “Samuel isn’t boring. I look forward to sharing our new home with Samuel...but not this year.”

“Do you wish you had waited to get married?”

Rachel shook her head. “I love being married. Even though, our property’s a short distance away, it won’t be the same. And Daed needs me to cook and clean.”

“Judith can do more.”

“She’s been cleaning the kitchen and doing the dishes each night. She’s going to cook one evening for us because Jacob’s coming to dinner on Saturday.”

Katie smiled. “So Judith’s experimenting on you first. I remember how Noah and Matthew stopped in here after school while you were in Florida. They wanted to get something to eat before they went home to eat Judith’s cooking.
