It was almost two hours later when I pushed back from my computer and rubbed my tired eyes.

A dull headache pounded at the base of my skull, but I now had a decent list of names to contact, as well as several authors and two editors I knew from various events I’d attended over the past few years who’d agreed to be guests. Each of them had offered a donation for the auction, ranging from page critiques to signed first editions.

Tom had come in not long after Saul had left and pushed a note in front of me.

Venue confirmed, deposit paid. Confirmation #42987V23, Company Visa, approved by Saul.

I’d breathed a little easier after seeing that, and one more knot loosened after he put a second note in front of me.

Caterer will be contacting you tomorrow. They’ve agreed to fit the event in, providing Saul agrees to pay a rush deposit. Saul’s already approved that too.

I’d already heard from my counterpart, Sandra, who’d basically kicked her short-term replacement to the curb after getting the okay from her boss to telecommute for the next few weeks until the doctors agreed to let her come back to work. For issues that required a more on-hand presence, she’d dragged a co-worker into the ring.

Right now, she’d told me, her immune system was shot to hell and back, and they couldn’t risk her catching so much as a cold.

She kept trying to apologize, but I’d told her it wasn’t necessary. She hadn’t screwed up. Her replacement had, and as Saul and Webster had told me, they’d dropped the ball.

You were busy dealing with cancer, Sandra. I think that takes precedence.

Apologies weren’t needed, nor would they accomplish anything.

The past two hours of work and research had given me a starting point, and Webster was already reaching out to his contacts to find more guests and donations. Within the next few days, we’d have the promotional and ad artwork we needed to set up the public site for those who wanted to purchase tickets, but I still had a lot of work to accomplish before then.

Namely, finding more authors, getting more prizes.

An idea occurred to me as I pushed back from the desk.

Instinctively, I brushed it aside.

But then I stopped and considered it.

It wasn’t a bad idea, not really.

Actually, it was fairly smart.

What was the worst thing that could happen, other than him saying no?
