Chapter 5

Liam didn’t know what to think. Iris was indeed a whirlwind, as she told him her mother had often called her. She half did jobs, and yes, she had the best of intentions and a beautiful smile that lit up a room… but was that enough? He wasn’t sure. A smile and good intentions weren’t really enough to reduce the stressful environment that had been created.

He sighed and put the kettle on the other burner. The one he wanted it on. Why was it no one ever put it in its right place?

Sniffing the air, he was surprised to smell something good. He peered at the stew, simmering, and looked at the oven where some sort of dessert was baking. Could it be she had gotten better at preparing meals? Desperately, he hoped so. His mother wasn’t exacting or demanding, but she did speak her mind. Truth be told, he was a little worried about what she might say about Iris. Other than their short wedding, his mother hadn’t seen her since she arrived.

Liam strode to the back door and opened it. Where was Iris? He stepped onto the back porch and then saw her. His breath caught. Iris looked so radiant. The sun poured over her, making her almost angelic looking. He’d never seen such a thing.

His heart started to speed up. It had been doing that as of late. He wondered if he needed to see the doctor to have himself checked. The strange thing was though, it only happened when he caught sight of Iris. What did that mean? He frowned. A panic attack? Had he become anxious?

But none of those things felt right when he pondered them. He took a moment to really study Iris. She appeared to be singing to herself as she tended to the garden. Being out here among the vegetable plants and her flower seeds seemed to make her incredibly happy.

That all said, the garden had never looked so good nor produced so well. Iris had a gift for making plants flourish under her fingertips—something he sure didn’t have the ability to do.

Iris caught sight of him and waved, her face brightening. That strange fluttering in his heart started again, but he ignored it, and walked closer to her.

“Look!” Iris said happily, as she pointed to a plant. “We finally have blooms on the squash plants.”

“Why, so we do,” Liam said in surprise. He’d tried three years now to grow squash, and it never produced. Would this year be the one it did?

He watched as Iris pulled a few more weeds, then stood and dusted her hands.

“I was just about to go inside and check on dinner,” she told him.

Was that a touch of hesitation or worry in her tone? Liam understood. He’d eaten her cooking. Each time he’d also worried. He cleared his throat. “Fine, fine,” he said. His eyes roamed over the garden. “Would you like a bench somewhere?” he surprised himself by asking.

Iris gasped, and held her hands to her chest.
