At dusk, we were on the move again. I wrapped the rest of the Johnnycake in a clean towel and tucked it in with my belongings in Carlos’s leather satchel. My boots had dried, and I was glad of them as we cut our own path through the thick woods. We weren’t sure where we washed up, but we were closer to Natchez than New Orleans. If we were lucky, Aleister Gale, Jimmy, and the Ogden Brothers hadn’t gotten too far ahead of us to post wanted signs. I trusted Carlos to keep me safe, but I honestly didn’t think he knew which way to go.

“Did the names Squire Jean gave you get washed away in the river?”

He pulled his leather journal from his inside coat pocket. The pages were damp at the edges, but the writing was still legible. We were looking for a woman by the name of Agatha Mae. Squire Jean said she’d get us as far north as I needed to go for a time. I wasn’t sure what that meant, but Agatha Mae lived in Jackson, Mississippi. That was a long way to walk. Boots or no boots, my feet would only carry me so far.

“If I was on my own I could travel further faster,” Carlos said.

“I’m sorry I’m holding you back,” I said.

“Don’t you know a spell to get us there quicker?”

“Magic doesn’t work like that.”

We trudged on through the woods. The moon had been full the night before and still provided plenty of light for me to see. Carlos could see in the dark like a cat, but I didn’t possess the same supernatural abilities.

Full moon. I wondered if the loup-garou would reveal itself to the other slave catchers. Carlos never came right out and told people what he was until they either guessed at his nature, or it was too late. Neither did he try to hide what he was. Aleister Gale used deception to hide the fact that he was a monster. When he wasn’t a wolf, he appeared to be just like other men. His life was a perpetual lie. He hunted Carlos for revenge, and maybe to stop him from killing, but that made him a hypocrite, because he killed people, too. Maybe he thought his motives were more honorable, but murder is murder.
