Lake

Iwas currently in the kitchen with the women in Ishaq’s family, and I was nervous as hell. I thought Fran being here would help, but it didn’t. She didn’t seem to mind them all up in her business, but I did. That little sister of his was a hot ass mess. Like now, she was the one doing the questioning.

“Why you tried to play my brother the other day in the store? He was mad that you wouldn’t talk to him and tried to take it out on me. What you do?” she asked.

“Uh, I didn’t do anything. We had a misunderstanding, but we talked about it later, and we’re good now,” I clarified.

“Uh huh. He told me how old you were, so don’t think you gonna be punkin’ my brother because you’re older than him because my hands don’t have an age limit,” she sassed, causing her grandmother to pop her arm.

“Lamiyah, watch your mouth. What does she mean older than him? How old are you exactly, Lake?” his mom asked me.

“I’m thirty-one,” I said.

“Thirty-one!” His aunt and other sister yelled at the same time.

“If you don’t mind me asking, how did you meet my grandson?” his grandmother asked as she wiped her hands on the towel that was beside her.

“Uh, well. He’s…” His sister Miyah cut me off before I could finish my sentence.

“She’s his counselor from the courts,” she blabbed. This girl really didn’t know when to shut up.

“I don’t think I was talking to you. So you’re Ms. Alexander?” his mom asked.

“Yes ma’am, I am.”

“How many young boys do you go after that are newly released?” his aunt questioned.

“Excuse me? I don’t mean any disrespect, but who and how many I do is none of your business. I’m grown, and I can do as I please. But to answer the question, Ishaq is the first client that I have ever been involved with. No, I didn’t pursue him. It was the other way around. I really like him, and if that’s a problem for you, then that’s just your problem.” I didn’t want to come off rude, but I never liked for people to be in my business or judging me. I was grown, and I did as I pleased.

“Yass, best friend!” Fran squealed.

“I like her,” his sister Yasmeenah said.

“I do, too. My baby did good. Both of them,” his mom said.

“Um, you do know you have three sons, right?” Dayyan’s girlfriend, Kelli, said.

“Girl, you know nobody don’t like you,” Miyah said.

“Lil’ girl, I ain’t her. You better stay in your place,” Kelli snapped.

“I don’t know you, so leave me out y’all mess,” I told her.

“Girl, if you don’t sit yo’ ol—” She was cut off by Ishaq’s aunt.

“Kelli, shut the hell up. You already know how everyone feels about you, and you’re holding on by a string with Dayyan. Mind your mouth and your business. You will not ruin today for my sister and her husband. Either get wit’ it or get out.”

“Lake and Fran, you two are more than welcome to be a part of this family as long as my sons show interest.
