Zax

“I like this bluff,” said Isaac, spreading out the blanket. “I used to come here a lot by myself or with my siblings, watching the sun and moon. It’s peaceful.”

Zax took the other end of the blanket and helped his mate set it down, then placed the basket on it to prevent it from blowing over. It was breezy up on the bluff, but the stone was warm and the view was incredible.

It didn’t hurt that they had hot coffee in a thermos.

Isaac knelt on the blanket and started to take the food out. It wasn’t anything elaborate—just sandwiches—but Zax appreciated the effort. Meals were a special time back on Pliaria XII, with the whole family pitching in to cook them everyday. He had been saddened to learn that on Earth, many people were too busy to eat with their families.

He wouldn’t be living a life like that with his child. Some of the traditions and values from Pliaria XII had to be brought back. There was no way he was going to just let them be forgotten, assimilated into this new world.

And now, he was having the first real meal with his new family. The baby was present, even if he or she didn’t know what was happening. Zax could feel the presence now, because the idea had sunk in. And it was a good thing, because Isaac was due within just a couple of weeks.

Isaac handed him a plate with his sandwich and some fruit and Zax bit into it gratefully, tired from the hike. The crunch of leaves and vegetables and the meaty taste of grilled chicken was mouth-watering, and he immediately took another bite.

Isaac was already making headway on his; the man’s appetite had changed drastically recently, and he had even started craving combinations that were supposedly strange. To Isaac’s surprise, Zax was entirely open to trying these combinations as well—simply because he wasn’t aware what was proper on Earth. Isaac had assured him that peanut butter and pickles was not done, but Zax had no idea why—he found it delicious.

Why wouldn’t the people of Earth just eat what tasted good to them? It was silly. But then, it was like that on Pliaria XII, even though the Pliarians didn’t get pregnancy cravings. He remembered that as a child, he had enjoyed making strange food combinations, though his mother had simply laughed and allowed him to experiment.

The memory brought an unexpected prickle to his eye. She was never going to meet his child, her grandchild, and neither would his father. The baby was never going to know its Pliarian grandparents, or even see Pliaria XII. Zax was going to have to work extra hard to make sure his heritage was passed down. Hopefully, Isaac would be amenable to it.

“God, that was so good,” said Isaac, wiping his hands and lying back on the blanket, staring up at the sky, which was starting to become golden yellow with the setting of the sun.

“It was delicious,” agreed Zax, taking a swig of cold water.
