Chapter Eighteen
Wendell arrived on Friday, in a new car. He said that he had had her all out last week and she touched seventy. Not bad for a little bus like that, was it? He brought Elizabeth an enormous box of chocolates, and some hothouse roses. She took them as graceful gifts to the hostess, and thanked him very much. Then he said, By Jove, topping place this, what? and admired the what-you-may-call it in the hall.
âOh, the warming-pan!â Elizabeth said.
âYes. Jolly picturesque and quaint, anâ all that. Hullo! Nice little spaniel, that. Envy you this place, Ramsay, âpon my word I do. âSpose youâre a great gardener, Betty, what?â
âNo, Iâm very stupid about it,â Elizabeth said. âThe gardener says I pick the wrong flowers. Are you fond of the country?â
âOh, rather! Country in winterâjolly nice, you know. Hunting, anâ all that. Had a very good day a month ago with the Quorn. Pal oâ mine belongs. Dâyou hunt?â
âI donât ride at all. Stephen does, only he doesnât care for hunting.â
Wendell stared at Stephen.
âWhat, not really?â
âIâm a conscientious objector,â Stephen said.
âOhâfox gets a damn fine run for its money,â Wendell said vaguely. âEven chances, donât you know?â
âI wasnât really thinking about the fox, but about the mere human.â
Wendell was nonplussed. Queer chap, Ramsay.
âHuman? Donât quite get you.â
âI like to discourage the primeval instinct,â Stephen said.
âOhâerâquite, quite!â Wendell answered, totally at sea. âYou writing chaps always have funny notions. I say, Betty, I brought my golf clubs. You promised to take me round, remember?â
âI think youâd better go with Stephen,â she smiled. âMy golf is very little better than my billiards.â
âThen itâs jolly good,â he said stoutly. âStephenâs got to write his book.â
Next morning she did take him round the golf-course, to prepare him, he said, for his round with Stephen in the afternoon. They did not play very seriously, but they talked a lot.
Wendell, striding along beside Elizabeth, said,
âNot looking awfully fit, are you, Bets? Tired, I mean, and a bit thin.â
She thought how kind it was of him, and how sympathetic, to ask her.
âI had âflu in January, and I havenât really got over it yet.â
âShould think itâs pretty dull for you, buried down here, with Stephen writing all day,â he remarked.
âSometimes it is,â she sighed. âI was brought up in town you see. Itâs rather a change.â
âYes, rather. Rotten for you. Any decent people living here?â
âOhâwell, one or two. Theyâre quite nice, but not very great friends of mine.â
Wendell nodded, just as though he quite understood. He didnât ask her to be more explicit; that was so refreshing.
âYou ought to get Stephen to take a flat in town,â he said. âBe near your friends, and all that.â
âI donât think he would,â she said lightly. âHeâs so fond of the Halt. He was brought up here, just as I was brought up in town.â
âVery bad luck,â he nodded. âWhat dâyou do with yourself all day?â
That was just it. She didnât do anythingâat least, nothing specific. If only there was something that she could do it would be different.
