If you have your own transportation, you may want to consider exploring the area outside the town of Niagara Falls, most notably Niagara-on-the-Lake, a lovely little historic town, and there are several prime wineries that merit a visit hereabouts also.

Formed at the end of the last Ice Age, about 12,000 years ago, Niagara Falls 1 [map] (www.niagaraparks.com) actually consists of three falls – Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls – that straddle the international border between Canada and the USA; they can all be viewed for free along the extended promenade that runs along the Canada side. Niagara Falls is also the namesake city in which the falls reside, a medium-sized Canadian town that is strikingly tacky but colourful with casinos, sleazy motels and tourist traps.

The views of the falls are, thankfully, best appreciated from the Canadian side, and are at their wildest in the late spring and early summer. The Horseshoe Falls are the mightiest and are 57 metres (188ft) high and 790 metres (2,600ft) wide. During the winter, ice formations on the falls are often spectacular and the crowds have disappeared. The falls are illuminated in a rainbow of colours every evening, from dusk until late, certainly one reason to stick around for a night. Fireworks shows, right above the falls, are held nightly beginning at 10pm in the summer, then just on weekends and special holidays throughout the rest of the year.
