After pulling into my assigned parking space, I killed the engine to the Maserati. Kayaâs assigned spot was one floor up, yet another reason I hadnât noticed we lived in the same building. We sat in comfortable silence. I didnât want the night to end, but I wasnât inviting her to my place. I knew better, because my resolve was hanging by a thread.
Once sheâd dropped all the pretenses and weâd admitted our issue with each other was really attraction, I realized what a smart, kind, and funny person she was. I couldnât tell you the last time I enjoyed dinner as much as I had tonight. Being with her, talking to her was just . . . different. I couldnât wait to tell Breck all about this, even if he would razz me for being a dense idiot.
âKaya?â She shifted to look at me, and I smiled. âI donât want tonight to be over yet.â
I saw her swallow, and then her tongue came out to lick her lips. âMe either.â She leaned over the console and put her hand on my cheek. I really liked when she did that. âWant to come to my place? Lei is out.â Whether she meant it the way it sounded or not, I knew I had to do the right thing.
I covered my hand with hers and used my other to push a curl back behind her ear. âThe only reason Iâm going to say no is because I know my limits, and being alone with you in a condo is way beyond what I can do right now.â
She threw her head back and laughed, and I leaned my head into her neck and kissed her smooth skin. She immediately silenced and sighed, running her hands through my hair as I kissed both sides of her neck, her ear, and then, finally, those pillow-soft lips I was already obsessed with.
âHe now has a virtue, friends,â she whispered against my lips. âRight when the woman heâs with doesnât want to have one.â I could not think seriously about her words, because otherwise my resolve would be gone.
âLetâs go to the rooftop deck. Iâll bring drinks. We can sit by the pool and talk.â Our lips were still a breath away from touching. This time, Kaya used her fingertips to touch my lips, and I swore she had fire at the ends of her fingers.
âOkay. Letâs do that. I definitely want to change. Meet you there in fifteen minutes?â
I opened the car door, and this time she let me open hers and help her out. When she stepped out, I moved closer and her arms went around me naturally, like sheâd been doing this forever.
Forever. An f-word I definitely didnât like to think about or use, but thinking of Kayaâs arms around me for a long time didnât suck. Not even a little bit.
