Chapter 13

Tasmin hated to admit it, but she was still overwrought over Dr. Bellevue’s visit. He’d backed her into a corner very quickly, telling her that he was there for her, how very much he cared, and how he could see how much she needed his assistance. She kept telling him that she was fine and to leave her alone, even to get out of her shop, but the closer he got, the less her voice seemed to want to operate, and that terrified her more than anything. He seemed to understand that she was struggling, yet, instead of giving her support, he just fed on it. She shuddered at the reminder.

“Hold tight,” Hanson said calmly beside her.

She looked over at him. “I just … I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t shown up,” she whispered.

He looked at her sharply.

She shrugged. “I told him to leave me alone. I told him to get out of my store. I told him that I wanted nothing to do with him, yet he just kept getting closer and closer,” she cried out softly.

“Yet, how did he know where I was, unless it really just a fluke from hearing about me through the media?” she asked, her voice gaining in strength. “It had to have been my family.” She glared around at her surroundings. “And if they did that …”

“And when you say they …”

“If it was them, I would prefer to think it was my father because that’s the behavior I would expect from him, but I don’t know that it was him.”

“No, you don’t, and you also don’t know why he would do that, since you haven’t had any contact with him.”

“And I keep his damn business running for free,” she snapped.

He pondered that. “Which also is a reason for your sister not to report you to the crazy doc because it would mean she could lose a free worker.”

“That’s true,” Tasmin said in shock. “So I can’t see it being either of them. I mean …” And then she sank back again. “I just don’t know,” she said, her fear evident in her tone. “It’s all just too bizarre.”

“It might be too bizarre,” he agreed, “but it’s not so bizarre that it didn’t happen. Unless it’s just because of the news articles. How much trouble did you have getting loose last time?”

“I had a lot of trouble,” she admitted. “It was an enormous hardship to
