FIGURE 7â1. An image that is likely of James Lawrence McDonald (Choctaw), painted during his stay in Ohio, although the current description of the image refers to him as a member of the Miami Nation, Courtesy of the Ohio History Connection (H 24742). See the appendix for further details.
By October 1823 James McDonald had relinquished his attempts to carve out a life for himself in Ohio, at least for the time being. He had received news that his brother, Alexander Hamilton, had died, and, feeling few attachments to his life in Cincinnati, he felt compelled to return to the lower Mississippi Valley to take care of his familyâs affairs. After âthe disposal of some small propertyâ he owned âin that country,â he told John Calhoun, he would pursue a career as a lawyer in âeither the State of Mississippi or that of Alabama.â17 James McDonald would indeed wield his legal expertise after arriving in his homelands, but his plans to settle in the U.S. South dramatically diverged once he got there (Fig. 7â1).
