Chapter 24
I grabbed my phone, as I headed out of the hotel room. I wanted to get something to drink. My phone started to vibrate. I looked at it. It was a text from coach.
“Hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work hard. Never forget that Clinton. I’m real proud of you.”
“Thanks coach. I really appreciate that.”
“I’ll get up with you when everything is settled. I know you’re going to be busy all day. I’ll get up with you. Congrats again!”
“Thanks Coach.”
Moments later, the elevator door opened. When I walked on, my fellow ACC rival and Green Room invitee from Florida State, Al Thorton, was occupying the cart.
“What’s up, CJ,” he said.
“Ain’t nothing much man,” I replied, as the doors closed.
He said, “Man, I couldn’t sleep at all. I’ve been nervous as hell all night.”
“Shit, I slept like a baby,” I smiled.
“This shit is like so unreal, man. It’s like all our dreams are really coming true,” he said, as we reached the second floor of the hotel.
“I know. I’m still in shock,” I replied, as the door opened. “I don’t think it’ll really hit me until tonight though.”
“Probably,” he said, as he stepped off. “I’ll see you ‘round though.”
“Ight,” I said, as we bumped fists before going our separate ways.
Once I bought the bottle of water I was seeking, I started to make my way back to the room. As I was approaching the elevator, I could feel my phone vibrating. I looked at it. It was Giselle.
Suddenly, feelings of guilt started to fill my stomach. I thought about not answering the call, but that would be something that Dedrick would do. I’m better than that.
“Sup, pretty lady,” I said, as I turned around and headed for one of the empty lounge chairs in the lobby.
“Nothing much. I was watching Sports Center. Your name is all over that. I thought I’d give you a call.”
I didn’t say anything.
“Are you happy?” she said.
“Yes, I am, but I don’t want to celebrate until Mr. Stern calls my name and I walk across that stage and shake his hand—you feel me?”
“I completely understand,” she said.
“Is everything ok with you, though?” I asked.
She said, “Yeah, it is what it is. I just wish that something more could have come out of us. But I’ve learned from my brothers that you can never force a man to do anything that he doesn’t want to do.”
“Oh,” I thought about our situation.
She continued, “I wanted things to go further between us. I mean the sex and the companionship was good, but I wanted to be your girl.”
“Why didn’t you ever say anything?”
“Because I knew that you knew what I wanted. I didn’t want to come off as if I was using you as my meal ticket—for lack of a better word. But, I wanted you to see me as genuine. I’m not a gold digger. I wasn’t interested in you because of your name. Hell, I didn’t even know who you were until the damn probate show.
