Cian

As I meditated, my phone vibrated, buzzing in the silence. I wasn’t finished, so I grunted, irritated at the interruption. The only person I didn’t care about interrupting me was Addy, only because she kept me sane and whole with everything she did.

She was still sleeping off our long night of lovemaking.

“Brady,” I said when I answered the phone.

“Hey, Cian, uhm… can we meet and bring Callum with you? Ronan wants to talk about something with us to, uh… make plans. He wants us to meet at his penthouse in an hour.”

Brady hadn’t been himself for a long time, nearly two years. His personality used to be like Callum’s, but something happened to him somewhere down the line. He’d been depressed and quiet, talking to none of us until he connected with Charles several months back, finally finding the happiness he deserved.

“I’ll be there.”

After I hung up, I texted Callum to meet us at Ronan’s, then I headed to the bathroom for a shower. Ronan clearly had a job for us, but since Brady called, and with the strain in his voice, I wondered if it was personal.

Addy was still sleeping when I got dressed. Instead of waking her, I kissed her cheek and wrote her a note, explaining that I’d be back later. Then I strapped on two guns and headed out.

When I reached Ronan’s place, everyone was there already. One glance at Brady, and I knew something was terribly wrong. His face was hard and tense, but his eyes were filled with a pain I’d never seen in him before. “What’s happened?” I asked as I sat next to Callum on the sofa and leaned against his shoulder.

Brady was controlling his rage and despair, so Ronan took over. My gut clenched, seeing my brother in so much pain.

“We all knew something was wrong with Brady for the past couple of years. He finally came clean to me after nearly blowing a job the other day. I just learned that the Italians murdered his lover, Gabriel Santoro, the nephew of the Don, Gio Santoro. Apparently, it was in retaliation for not only being gay but being the lover of Connor O’Callaghan’s son. Vinny Vinci had his goons beat Gabriel to death and made Brady witness it.”

The news made me want to murder every single person who was a part of the Italian mafia. My own normally controlled rage threatened to spill over. I glanced over at my brother, Brady. His normally buzzed red hair was growing out, and he needed a shave. He looked like shit. No wonder he’d been struggling.

“Holy fuck, Bray! Why the hell didn’t you come to talk to us?” Callum asked. “We could have taken care of Vinny and made him pay for what he did.”

“Vinny threatened our lives and tried to start a war between the Irish and the Italians. I did it to protect you all and mom.”

I shook my head. Did he suffer all that time to protect us? “I could have easily taken him out, Brady,” I said.
